Patrick snored softly on the couch while Natasha slept on the carpet just in front of him, wrapped in a dark purple blanket. A stuffed llama toy poked out of the blanket down by her feet.
Pete grinned as he shut the door behind him. His guy and his little girl were so cute. What did he ever do to deserve them?
He pulled his phone out of his pocket to snap a picture. Patrick's hand twitched with the sound of the camera's snap. Pete chuckled to himself. He clicked the photo but, before he could get it fully loaded, an incoming phone call invaded his screen.
Meagan.
Pete answered quickly, hopping the phone's ringing hadn't pulled Patrick or Natasha too far from their slumber. "Hello?"
"Pete?" Her voice was soft and delicate, like she was trying to avoid waking someone as well.
"What's up?" Pete asked, shoving his free hand into his pocket.
"I just called to let you know we booked our train tickets back home." She replied.
"Oh."
"Yea..." She paused. "Pete, I'm sorry for wasting your time. I just wanted to know and you were with me right around when..."
"Hey, it's okay." Pete paused too. He looked down at Natasha, who was still sleeping peacefully. He smiled down at her, though his smile faltered just slightly after a second. "We both wanted to know."
There was a sad laugh on the other end of the line. "Now we know."
Pete nodded. "Now we know."
"I should get going..."
"Yea, me too... Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Pete lowered the phone, unsure what all was going through his mind at the moment. Relief. Guilt. Understanding. Frustration. Just. So. Much.
He shook his head. It was over. She was already set to leave his life once again. He had his current life to worry about.
Patrick was still asleep. He didn't even stir when Pete planted a soft kiss next to his eye. He slept through Pete lifting Natasha off the ground and carrying her to her crib without waking her. He slept through Pete coming back into the living room to ruffle his hair and cover him in their warmest blanket. He slept through Pete making a bed on the floor in order to sleep near him.
"Goodnight, Punk." Pete whispered, looking up at his husband's peaceful face. "I love you."
