we sit and stare
as the girl with scars
across her legs and arms
runs in a bathing suit completely free
we look in awe
at the man who couldn't live
without his coke fix
stand tall and strong.
we see
the woman with anxiety
who could hardly talk
is chalk full of voice
we congratulate
the depressed boy
who couldn't get out
of his room let alone his house
step outside and breathe.
little do we know
this girl,
is our sister
this woman,
is our teacher
this man,
is our family
this boy
is our best friend.
These people are the people we know,
the ones we love,
We don't see their struggle
we see their healing
we weren't there for their pain...
and while they're okay now...
they're strong
and confident
healed and whole....
what if they weren't?
why didn't we see?
why didn't we love.... trust... forgive?
