"Well we'd have to-" Kohl opened his mouth. "Actually, no," I said instantly, cutting him off. "Actually no, what?" He asked me with a puzzled expression. "I don't want to do it. I don't want to fake anything with you." I replied. He looked a little hurt but he instantly recovered.
He thought for a moment. "Okay... And, why not? I told you my reasons." "I don't know. I don't want to get involved."
"Okay... Again, I told you my reasons but you haven't told me yours." "I just did!" I shouted at his accusation. "Not the real reason though?" We sighed at the same time. How could I tell him the real reason when I didn't know myself?
"It doesn't matter anyway." He shrugged. "Why is that?" I asked Kohl. "Because you'll play along anyway." "And why would I do that?" "Because I really don't have the energy to deal with May right now." "Okay fair enough but what's that got to do with me?" He looked taken aback and looked at me as if he was about to give up.
Or I thought. Then he shifted towards me, almost closing the distance between us. Kohl tightly held my hips and looked at me endearingly. My chest tightened.
"There you guys are!" May said from across the room. My heart stung.
I shifted a little to turn to acknowledge her but Kohl's hands held me in place, stopping me from facing anywhere but him.
I was filled with disappointment. It's not like I didn't know he was putting on a show. It had been the fact that he ignored my wishes to not go ahead with the plan. Just when I'd thought he changed.
Kohl dipped his head low enough that both our noses leaned against each other. He whispered "Play nice, kitten." I cringed against his touch. But I surprised myself by coating on a fake smile back at him.
We both turned to face May at the same time, who was now standing pretty close to us. "Oh," she said. "You both look pretty cute together." Something about her tone didn't suggest warmth but rather it sounded quite suspicious. She looked at me up and down as if she had nothing to worry about and that had my fists clenching.
"Kohl babe, I wanna show you something!" Just when Kohl was about to refuse. May quickly told us she needed to go to the bathroom first instead.
The moment she got away, I pulled away from Kohl, pushing his chest back. "I didn't agree." I glared right at him. I was about to walk away when he grabbed my arm "Come on." He looked desperate. I felt bad. It had me questioning exactly how bad had May screwed him up.
But again, this had nothing to do with me. I didn't like this. Faking affection towards each other when there was anything but that between us. It was lying, to everyone.
And most importantly I didn't want to show myself what Kohl and I weren't. I didn't want to build our relationship, whatever it was, based on lies or fall in love with someone who wouldn't love me back.
I watched Kohl with sympathy, I was ready to refuse him again. But at that moment May appeared again looking at the both of us with a baffled expression. She smiled once her eyes met Kohl's and she practically leapt towards him and held his arm.
"Ready for me to show you?!" She beamed with excitement at Kohl.
Kohl not breaking eye contact with me, still gave me that look that said 'please'. I decided I couldn't bear it anymore, I held Kohl's hand. Kohl watched our hands and he intertwined his own with mine. While he smiled at me, May watched us with disguised disgust. "Where are you taking us?" I asked coyly.
May looked at me with confusion once more. Well, be prepared for more confusion, because I don't even know where this is going. As soon as she was about to open her mouth, Kohl cut her off "Yeah May, show us. I don't go anywhere without my baby." Yeah right. I scoffed. His hand that was once intertwined with my hand was now gripping my waist, he pulled me to him. I let out a gasp, forcing myself not to shudder.
Since May was still holding onto his arm, he dropped May's arm carefully and focused on staying close to me. She looked a little hurt by the act.
"Yeah, uh come along. You can come too, Dara." I knew I was intruding what she had planned for Kohl but it was too late for me to care now. She led me and Kohl to wherever it was that she wanted to show him.
When May wasn't looking I scowled at Kohl for continuing to hold my waist, I mouthed 'let go'. Instead of getting any butterflies anyone would normally get in a situation like this, I was internally dying of embarrassment. Relatives around us who at first may have thought the only thing binding the both of us was a legal contract now had other ideas as they smirked or giggled when we passed them.
Kohl looked completely oblivious as he mouthed 'what?' back to me. I pushed him a little so he could stop holding me. Aware of the eyes on us, I made it seem as if it was a playful shove by smiling and shrugging my shoulders.
May turned back around, "Kohl baby, remember this garden over there. We used to go by that tree and sit by that bench. I loved it when we did that. Didn't you?" She pointed towards a tree through the window view. "We only sat by that bench because you couldn't take any more walking in the heels you'd wear," Kohl muttered. I tried not to scoff.
"Has Kohl taken you anywhere nice and peaceful like our spot here?" Uh no, not really, but what's it to you was what I wanted to really say to her but Kohl beat me to it, "no, we haven't sadly but we're hoping to go on our honeymoon soon. Can't wait to get this one on her own." He said with a little mischief in his eyes.
Well we both know that won't happen, what May doesn't know can't hurt her, or him it seems.
My phone rang so I excused myself. It was my mother-in-law. "Hey mum, how's it going?" "Fine, sweetie. How's the wedding?" "Good! Longer than I'd expected it to be." "I'm glad! you don't have to stay till the end. Let me know when you both get home." "Will do, mum. Bye!" "Bye, love."
I went back to where Kohl and May were standing. They looked like they were arguing. "I know it's me you want, not her." "I'm over it, I don't even know why you came to this wedding." "I'm the bride's cousin if you've forgotten!" "Yeah, well shouldn't you be with her, rather than with me." "She's with her new husband, enjoying and I'm here with you, who could've been my husband." "Well, I'm not. I'm married and that to someone else, so leave me alone." "Pur-lease, I know what we had was more than what you have with her." Kohl sighed.
That seemed like my cue to save Kohl who looked almost defeated. "Kohl! That was mum." I signalled on my phone. "She was just telling me to make sure we got pictures together!" I looked at May as if an idea just came to me. "Ah May, would you please be a dear and take pictures of your good old friend and his wife?" I winked at her. "Uh sure." She said.
I positioned myself in front of Kohl and breathed in deep because I was aware of all the eyes on us but this wasn't the right time to second guess anything. I grabbed both of his hands to put them around me. "Smile Kohl." "I am! Breathe Dara" he scoffed while I paced my breathing. His grip around my stomach had felt odd but not unwelcome as my insides did weird things.
I moved away and shifted next to him this time, he looked at me with an expression I couldn't comprehend. "Did you get that?" I asked May, she nodded and went off probably to the drink stand.
As soon as I took my phone off May, I looked at the photos. Sure, they looked cute or whatever. "I loved your idea of having me hold you. That definitely got to May." Kohl said as he looked at the pictures. I turned around to find Kohl smirking.
Our eyes met and he looked at me once again with that odd expression. It clicked then, I could see that his eyes were filled with heat when he looked at me. Just as I gulped, he held my hand and led me to the storeroom.
