"It's a long story," the Joker brushed the question off, until he was met with Penguins intrigued gaze. He growled, balling his fists on the table. "And one that doesn't need to be told."
"If you insist. But let me tell you now, a baby won't last long with you two." Oswald chuckled darkly.
The Joker honestly felt hurt by his words. His heart stung in his chest as he became lost for words. Was that actually what he thought? Was that going to be what everyone will think?
His mind became numb, his face holding a blank expression while he began to bite on his inner cheek. "I think this meeting is over." He said abruptly, taking Penguin by surprise. He stood up from the chair, making sure to lean heavily on his good foot. The wooden legs screeched across the ground creating a skin crawling sound.
He shot Cobblepot a short glare before leaving the room. Making sure to slam the door. He paced the kitchen, where Frost was staring at him with a puzzled expression. The Joker looked over his shoulder.
"Go find Harley," He ordered, hoping she had calmed Lucy down by now. After a quick glance at his Rolex he spoke again. "I'll meet you at the van." With that he sauntered out one of the emergency exits.
The night was cold and his breath created what looked like smoke in the air. He pulled the jacket closer to himself, then fished out a packet of expensive cigars. They helped calm his nerves regularly, or to distract him in this case.
He reached for the lighter and cupped his hands around the small flame. Holding the cigar between his teeth as he lit it. He faced his back to the wind, his body protecting the defenceless light.
He sucked hard before letting out a relaxed sigh. His eyelids fell, vision appearing dark in colour as he shook under the cool wind that blew through his fluorescent, slicked back hair.
The breeze lifted away the smoke in a cloud, shaped unusually like a baby. He shook his head, swinging his hand to get rid of the image.
Why was this baby causing him so much trouble already? They only had her for less than a day and he was already getting impatient.
The smoke rising to the sky reminded him of the building on fire. The flames had scalded his skin, and burnt his clothes to a crisp. He almost lost his life to that fire, and for what? A baby that Harley will forget about in a week. He knew she was fickle. And he could almost bet his life that she would completely forget about Lucy within a week.
Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. He jumped slightly, not focused on reality while the thoughts swarmed his mind.
He spun around, and was met with two giggling blondes. Harley snatched the cigar from his fingers. She placed it delicately between her lips, then blew out perfectly shaped 'O's using the smoke. She grinned from ear to ear, staring into his darkened face from the loss of light in the dark alley.
The Joker smirked, linking his arm around hers as he dragged her along the path. Lucy was still held in her other arm, once again, protectively against her chest.
"See something you like?" Harley asked feeling a light blush creep onto her cheeks as she noticed his eyes on her.
"Maybe." He answered, leaning his body closer to her small frame. The heat from his torso immediately warming her up on the cold night.
She instinctively rested her forehead on his shoulder. The material of his jacket tickling her ear while her hand played with one of the black buttons. He wondered what she was always thinking about. Him? The Baby? Herself?
They strolled along, taking their time as they neared the parked van. Frost was leaning on the bonnet, staring at his phone. The Joker walked to the side door, sliding it open he held a hand to Harley. She graciously took it, stepping inside the vehicle followed by the mad man.
Frost slipped into the drivers seat, putting the van in reverse as he pulled out of the parking space. He drove out the entrance of the Iceberg Lounge and on the way back to the club.
Harley leaned heavily on Jokers arm. Letting out an audible yawn as she squeezed Lucy tighter. J raised his hand, gliding it through her platinum hair. He felt her go lax beside him.
Lucy still stared up at him, her bright orbs filled with curiosity, her smile was captivating as he lightly brushed her hair back.
"Puddin'?" Harley whispered, raising her head to look up at him.
"Hm?"
"I think we would make great parents." Harley said through a quiet yawn.
The Joker placed a sweet kiss on her forehead. He didn't reply, he was too mesmerised by the sight. Of his Harley, holding a young child in her arms, snuggled up against him. A genuine smile spread across his lips.
