Melissa's POV

I led Mike into the room, as I closed the door shut before hearing a click.

Once I made sure it was locked, I raised an eyebrow waiting for him to talk. The walls were soundproof so I didn't have to worry about Alyssa eavesdropping.

"So she's turning 18 in 6 months?" He asked clicking his tongue.

"She is." I confirmed.

Once she's 18 and dead, the property will be passed down to me, as I'm her closest relative - step mother.

Anne, Alyssa's mother had been my stepsister - well ex stepsister. My father and Anne's mother had divorced, so Alyssa didn't count as my relative anymore. Anne had a biological sister, Jane, who would be Alyssa's closest relative, and in turn receiving the house if I kill Alyssa. She was safekeeping the house until the brat turned 18. But since I adopted Alyssa, I would be her 'mother', meaning I would receive the property as her closest relative if she does die.

If only Jerry knew about my plan. The old man would probably fight me to death. That idiot loved Alyssa way too much.

Mike and I've figured out the entire plan, and then the house would be mine - we just need to get the murdering part figured out. Mike is a good person to have on my side. He is smart, and has connections. He's not the good man everyone thinks he is. I would know.

He had found out about my plan months ago and 'offered' his help for half the inheritance.

He threatened me, leaving me no choice. I agreed.

Greedy bastard.

But I lied when I agreed. He should've known better.

"So what are we doing again?" He cocked his head in my direction, grinning cheekily.

I rolled my eyes my eyes, before lowering my voice to a whisper. Just because the walls were soundproof, doesn't mean I didn't need to take precautions.

"We're killing Alyssa after she turns 18, so the million dollar house passes down to me, as I'm her closest relative."

My eyes flickered to his hands as I saw a quick suspicious movement..

"What did you do?" I narrowed my eyes.

He took out his phone and waved it at me.

"I recorded you. Darling, not everyone is as dumb as you think. I know you don't live up to your promises, but now you have no choice. When you get the house, you either give me my share, or I can report your actions."

Son of a bitch.

I gritted my teeth, "They can't tell that it's me speaking."

Mike is smart, I give him credit for that.

"They can, trust me." He looked into my eyes, "And I can testify against you - who do you think they'll believe? A trusted detective who has been working in the industry for over 10 years, or a broke woman who was once - and still could be, mentally unstable.

I sighed. "Fine, but you delete that straight after you get your share."

"Whatever you say, honey." He grinned like a mad-man, before meeting his lips with mine.

I really was working with the devil.

Alyssa's POV

When I had realised that the walls were soundproof, I immediately facepalmed.

Ugh, why didn't I think of that before?

Whatever, I'll find out next time.

So much for feeling like a detective.

I didn't know what to think when I saw Melissa and Mike come out of the room flustered, and their hair all messed up.

My eyes widened as I spotted a hickey on my aunt's neck.

How could she do this to Jerry? And with Mike? He had a wife too.

I shook my head slowly as I ran out of the door grabbing my phone, ignoring the desperate calls from Melissa.

I guess not everyone was who you thought they were.

I jogged to a nearby park to clear out my mind. I had decided that I wasn't going to tell Jerry. That poor man - I couldn't bear to imagine his reaction he would be if he found out.

He loved Melissa to death, and treated her like the moon.

A tear dropped out as I considered the dilemma. The man took me in, and turned my life around, and here I was, fucking backstabbing him.

And Melissa? I thought she loved him. I really did think she did.

Tears started dropping one by one all over again despite my trivial attempt to stop them.

I registered a wave of minty smell, before I was pulled into a hug.

"Thank you." I said to the person, lifting my head up, merely noticing the guilty look on his face.

And at that moment, I really did start to like Tyler.
