You huffed and puffed as you ran through the woods, the darkness unrelenting as you sprinted forward. The moon wasn't even bright enough to break through the dense brush above you. Though despite your fear of the dark, your fear of what was chasing after you scared you so much more. No matter how much your legs burned or your lungs stung, you continued your pursuit of freedom. If you got deep enough into the woods, he wouldn't find you. He was too large and lazy to chase you for longer than five minutes, even so, you continued to run. Determined to put as much distance as you could between you and that house.
You had no clue how long you ran for before you collapsed from pure exhaustion. You rolled onto your back, staring up at the starry sky that was dusted with light pink due to the rising sun. Your body was screaming in pain for sleep, and your mind was clouded by the sound. You closed your eyes, attempting to fight off the feeling as your breath slowly evened out, your lungs on fire. You snapped your eyes open only to have them drift shut once again, this time giving into the comfort of sleep.

You shot up from your slumber, breathing sharp and grasping your chest, your body and lungs immediately aching from still being sore, causing you to lay back down. You slowly came to your senses, letting your eyes adjust and calming your breathing. A scent of pine and wood came to your nose as you rubbed your eyes, sitting up carefully and looking around. Your face contorted into one of pure confusion as you examined your surroundings. You were in some kind of small wooden lodge, almost like an oversized shack. You looked down to see you were in a broke in sofa-like chair and covered in a pink fuzzy blanket, an older T.V. stationed before you playing a rerun of Ducktective. You stretched as you cracked your back, hissing in a bit of pain as it popped along with your shoulders.
You slowly got up out of the chair, folding the blanket and placing it over the back of the chair. You looked at yourself, seeing you were still in your ripped up, dirt covered clothes. You could now begin to feel your legs ache as you walked around the room , the small cuts and scratches from branches beginning to sting. You walked out of the room and into what looked like the kitchen witch brought you face to face with a small group of people. Two young teens, a boy and girl, two old men, one girl your age, and one man on the larger side. You stood there in the doorway and stared as they continued to chat among themselves and eat. That was until the girl teen spotted you.
"Oh my gosh! Guys she's awake!" She exclaimed, dropping her fork and point at you. You froze as all their gazed fixed onto you with looks of wonderment and... joy?
"Oh wow! We thought you'd be out for a lot longer than three days due to the state we found you in," one of the older men said. You gasped softly as your eyes widened, you were out for three days!?
"How are you feeling, Hun?" The other man said in a gentle and careful tone.
"Um... better, I guess," you mumbled in return as you looked around. "My name is (Y/n), if you don't mind me asking, where am I?"
"You're in the Mystery Shack!" The little girl exclaimed again. You nodded, having been in town for a week prior to your little night run you had heard of the famous shack.
"We found you outside about half a mile away. You were passed out and looked pretty rough so my sister and I had our great uncles come and bring you back here so we could try to help you," the boy teen spoke with a small smile.
"Oh, t-thank you..."
"Dipper Pines, and that's my twin sister, Mabel," he pointed to the girl.
"Thank you Dipper and Mabel, your rescue is much appreciated," you smiled at the two as they beamed in delight.
"I'm Stanford Pines, this here is my twin, Stanley Pines," said the first older man who spoke to you, "You can call me Ford and him Stan. We are the kids' great uncles. He said gesturing to Dipper and Mabel. You nodded as Stanley stepped forward and handed you a cup of tea.
"As my brother said, I'm Stanley. I own the Mystery Shack. Those two are Wendy and Soos, they work for me but they are practically part of the family." He smiled at the two as they waved.
"It's nice to meet you all, thank you for taking me in and trying to fix me up a bit," you smiled with an awkward laugh as you took a sip of your tea.
"If you don't mind me asking, what were you in the woods for so late at night?" Ford quizzed as he looked at you dumbfounded.
"I... I was running from... ahhh... a shadowy thingy," you quickly lied as you sipped your tea.
"A shadowy thingy?" Mabel repeated, seeming interested, Dipper leaning forward intently beside her.
"Yep. It was really dark so that's the only thing I saw was a dark figure. Sorry I can't tell you more."
"Hmm, well I suppose those woods are strange at night. It could have been anything really," Ford said as he shrugged.
"Yep, I didn't really get a good look at the shape either. I just ran," you said as you shifted your gaze to Ford.
"Would you all stop hounding her? The girl has obviously been through enough, geez. Anyways, your parents are probably worried sick kiddo, you need to get home." Stan said with concern. Your eyes widened for a split second before you calmed yourself.
"I-I don't think I have the strength to walk home," you shook your head as you backed away flinching to add extra affect. You had to get them to let you stay.
"That's alright! Grunkle Stan has a car!" Mabel smiled as you looked down at her.
"But I'm so exhausted, I really think I would be better off staying here a bit longer." You said, sounding a bit desperate as you began to sweat. They had to let you stay, you couldn't face going back to him.
"Are you sure (Y/n)? Won't your folks worry?" Ford asked, looking at you oddly.
"Y-yes I'm sure, they won't worry too-"
"Look if the girl wants to stay let her stay," the red head your age, Wendy, spoke up. "She obviously doesn't wanna leave yet so don't make her. It would probably worry her parents more if she came back to them looking like that anyways. At least let her clean up and try to gain strength before forcing her out. She isn't hurting anything by staying an extra day or two," she reasoned. The Pines looked to each other before nodding.
"Then it's settled, you'll stay until you feel up to leaving and look a bit less roughed up," Stan said with a smile.
"Thank you so much," you said calming down a bit as you smiled at them all. The twins walked up beside you, one on either side as they looked to their... Grunkles, did they call them?
"Grunkle Ford, Grunkle Stan, (Y/n) can stay in the guest room while she's here," Mabel smiled. The men nodded in agreement before smiling at you.
"Of course, that's a great idea Mabel. Why don't you and Dipper scurry along and clear it up for her?" Stan asked giving a 'shooing' sign with hand. They nodded and ran off giggling while you smiled.
"Thank you again, all of you. I would have been something's meal if you wouldn't have taken me back here."
"Yeah well, a young girl like you shouldn't be wasted by being digested by a beast of the forest, that's for sure," Ford chuckled as he walked up to you and placed a hand on your shoulder with a friendly smile. "I hope you feel better soon," he said before walking past you into the living room.
"Yeah... me too," you said looking down at the mug in your hands. The tea swirling around revealing your reflection as you looked down and frowned slightly. If only they knew what you were really running from.
