Chapter 5
The Test
When I opened my eyes I was confused, this was not my room. It took me a few seconds to remember, today was the day that I would find out who I was.
A knock on the door resounded through the almost empty room before Madame Glodenstone stepped in. She was wearing the same outfit as yesterday except for the fact that it was now a deep maroon color. “You both have approximately five minutes to make yourselves presentable and take these pills.” She said while placing two tan pills on the dresser.
“What are they?” I asked, my arms crossed.
“Stamina pills, eat one and you won’t be hungry for the rest of the day. This test is a twelve hour process so I highly suggest that you take the pill. I will be back in precisely five minute.” She nodded her head slightly and closed the door behind her.
I changed back into my clothes from yesterday and combed through my messy hair with my fingers. By the time I had finished Lucy was done and was examining one of the tan pills, rolling it in between her thumb and pointer finger.
“Morning.” I said as I walked over to her and picked up the other pill.
“Good morning!” She replied cheerily, her green eyes sparkled with excitement and anticipation.
“Well here goes nothing.” I said as I tilted my head back and let the pill fall down my throat. I instantly didn’t feel hungry for breakfast anymore.
Lucy had swallowed hers too and about twenty-five seconds later Mrs. Goldenstone came to collect us. We made our way down more hallways with Max and Josh in complete silence, the only sound being the tapping of our shoes on the hard stone floors. This continued until we reached a hallway with wooden doors lined up on either side, each one labeled with the word ‘testing’. She led us down to the very end where four doors were placed, the were marked with ‘divine testing’.
“Here is where your tests will be taking place. I wish you the best of luck.” Madame Goldenstone said through a strained smile while ushering us into our own separate rooms. As soon as the door closed behind me it vanished.
The room was completely white and had a cube shape to it. A lady was huddled in the far left corner. She was dressed in rags and had short, jagged, brown hair. I took a careful step towards her and when she didn’t react I continued to advance. I got about two feet away from her and stretched out my arm towards her shoulder when she whipped around and flung her fist which held a dagger towards my heart.
I panicked and fled to the other side of the room where I would be safe for maybe three seconds before she had reached and killed me. Unfortunately she was quicker than I was and she cornered me before I could reach my temporary safety, her blade was just centimeters from my throat.
Her face was so close to mine that her foul breath stung my eyes and her bloodshot ones looked at me hungrily. I closed my eyes and waited for the worst, but the worst didn’t come. I opened my eyes, all around me was a force field and the lady was clawing and screaming at it.
Suddenly everything melted away and I was in my school. All around me my classmates were pointing and laughing at me. I saw my best friends Stacy and Christina in the crowd. I went up to stacy and begged her to help me. “You’ve got to help me Stace, I don’t know why everyone’s laughing at me!”
She pushed me away with a look of disgust on her face. “Ew get off me worm!” She sneered. I sobbed and sunk to my knees and just stayed there until the laughter stopped.
I rose from the floor and found that I was floating in the ocean , I looked up towards the surface and started paddling towards it. I was almost there when something cold and slimy wrapped around my ankle and started dragging me down, away from the air that I needed so desperately. I writhed and squirmed but it would not give in to my struggles until I finally gave up and let the cold and darkness consume me.
I sat up gasping for air, my lungs burned and my throat was raw from sea water. I was in a library and in front of me was a piece of paper labeled ‘choose’. The four options underneath it were Yes, No, I Don’t Know, and What. I stared at the page and mulled the answers over in my mind, I shook my head and almost silently I muttered to myself. “I don’t know.” The paper immediately burst into flames, the blaze engulfed me and completely surrounded my vision until it cleared a few moments later to reveal a forest.
The trees seemed to be getting larger, by the time that I had realized the branches were actually coming towards me it was too late. They had already started constricting and squeezing my body. I struggled to escape their leafy binds but to no prevail, the branches squeezed me so hard that black spots danced across my vision and soon I felt the world slipping and I blacked out.
I woke up in a cave with a, oh dear god, giant sleeping dragon next to me. Its eye opened and its pupil became just a black slit in the flames that burned inside the sphere. It slowly uncoiled itself so that it stood at least fifty feet tall, its orange spines along its back unfurling and its ruby red scales gleaming. It lowered its head toward me, the movement forcing me to back against the cold cave wall. It got to be only one measly foot away from me before I did something that I would never had expected. I stretched out my arm and placed my hand against the smooth scales on its snout. It instantly disolved into dust and so did the cave.
I looked up and sighed, when would this end? Above me was the giant canopy of a mushroom head. The air around me had a green haze and every intake of breath was painful, the air was toxic. I covered my face with my shirt but the poison still seeped through and caused the world to spin. One moment I was standing, another I was lying on the ground with my face pressed into the mud. I lay there panting and letting the pain and confusion sweep me away.
I opened my now clear eyes, I was falling, hurtling towards the earth going a mile a second. The wind whistled in my ears and my eyes watered and stung. I hugged my knees to my chest and braced myself for the impact.
When the wind stopped and my hair fell limply onto my face I knew that it was over. I slowly pried my limbs away from my body and stood up on shaky legs. I was back in the white room, except that there was a door now. A clear female voice rang from the ceiling.
“Kendra Isabelle Abbot. Divine One of Witch and Animal Charmer, primary being: Witch. Warning to all Divine Ones from Madame Goldenstone: Secrecy is essential, no one must know that you are Divine. That is all, have a nice day.”
The door opened automatically after that, revealing eight hallways, all labeled with different beings. I took the one labeled ‘Witch and Wizard Dormitories’. About one-hundred feet along there was a fork in the path marked with ‘Witches’ and ‘Wizards’. I took the witches one because I assumed it was for girls and came across a purple circular pad of crystal on the ground. I stepped onto it and one moment I was staring at a dismal hallway and the next I was staring at Amy’s beaming face.
