Chapter 10

The End of the World

Lunch was scrumptious, as always, and the classes that came after it went exactly as I had pictured, up until dragon racing practice that is. During combat I learned how to properly wield my daggers and how to perform a lethal but fairly simple jab with them. In fire magics I developed the skill of how to make any part of my body searing hot to the touch.

Then came dragon racing practice or D.R.P, which a lot of people thought represented the word 'derp' so the abbreviation was rarely used, although sometimes people would say it as joke. Anyway, Mr. Berk was a smallish, toughish, vikingish man. He had relatively short and scraggly hair, tiny braids peeked from behind the mess of locks. I noticed that a lower part of his left leg was missing, and in its place was a strange metal contraption in the form of an extremely abstract foot-like shape, the purpose of such a strangely designed prosthetic was unknown to me. Mr. Berk was clad in the same thick garments that his wife bore.

A handful of other students were there, including Max. Mr. Berk called out for everyone to listen to him, and he explained to us exactly what dragon racing was. So apparently dragon racing is a sport in which all of the different Houses competed against each other. It was sort of like horse racing, but in the air and with deadly obstacles for the competitors to avoid. Once Mr. Berk was through with his lecture he dismissed us to meet our House teammates. My teammates were as follows: a petite, blonde girl named Susie, a muscular boy with his bright blue hair spiked into an enormous mohawk named Zachariah, a larger girl with shorter, brown hair named Rachel, and a tall boy with neatly cut black hair named Jeremy. Together we represented the Magic House.

Zachariah stood far away from the group as we introduced ourselves and shared a few laughs, shooting us menacing glares every so often. After all of the teams' members got to know each other, Mr. Berk explained that we wouldn't be doing any actual dragon riding until next week. Also that we would be informed of the official rules for dragon racing, proper techniques and safety cautionaries this week. But for today we would just have time to get to know and bond with our fellow racers.

Susie immediately walked over to me and started up a conversation. "So what species of dragon do you have?" She questioned.

"Um, I have a Skyfury, what about you?" I answered.

Susy's eyes widened in awe. "Oh wow! I have a Sandwhip, but it's not nearly as cool as a Skyfury!" Her dragon's name was unfamiliar to me but I suspected that I would learn about it soon enough.

I gave her a polite smile. "Thanks, your dragon sounds pretty cool itself." Susy beamed at my compliment, her cheeks warm with pride.

Just then the bell rang and I bid farewell to my newly acquired friends, well, all of them except for Zachariah, and tried to find a spot to spend my free period. I settled on a shady area under a cherry tree in one of the academy's many courtyards. I sighed as I plopped down heavily on the lush grass, I leaned back against the solid trunk of the beautiful tree and relaxed my muscles.

A delicate pink cherry blossom petal floated down towards me, it danced and swirled in the almost nonexistent breeze before flitting to a stop on my lap. I picked it up and held it between my thumb and forefinger, such a tiny and simple thing could become stunning and gorgeous when joined with hundreds of its kind. I concentrated and set those two fingertips ablaze, resulting in the automatic disintegration of the small petal.

The tapping of shoes on stone brought my attention away from the burning scrap of foliage. Madame Goldenstone was promenading towards me at her usual hurried pace. I sighed inwardly, what did she want now?

Her tone was serious when she addressed me. "Kendra, we have important matters to discuss, come with me." I sighed outwardly that time as I got up from my comfortable place by the cherry tree. This earned me a fiercely disappointed glare from Madame Goldenstone, the pure annoyance that it portrayed caused my skin to prickle with the slightest hint of shame.

I followed Madame Goldenstone to the room where I first met her and the others. I now recognised the place as the Principal's office. Madame Goldenstone motioned for me to sit in a chair that was lined up neatly with three others, each seat held one of my fellow Divine Ones. Madame Goldenstone sat at her desk, her arms were crossed and she looked as if she were contemplating something of great importance.

She took a large gulp of air before launching into speech. "I suspect that you all have unanswered questions for me, so that is why I have decided that the best way to inform you, is to tell you the entire story, from the very beginning to now.

She raised her eyebrows and looked into each of our eyes in turn. "Now, without further ado, let's begin. Long ago, before this school was founded, different beings did not get along or cooperate very well. There were constant arguments and soon they were all forced to live in separate parts of the Earth. As time passed all of the beings began to get jealous on one another's land. And thus began the war, this particular feud caused the deaths of about ¾ of the Earth's total beings, that is why we are less common now. The greatest wizards of the time knew that this war would leave the earth in ruins, so they devised a plan. They made it so that time, for humans, was stopped and the beings could fight without the humans ever knowing. So the war commenced at full force, and it wasn't until 200 years later that it ceased. The war was stopped because four heroes pulled all of the darkness and hatred out of everyone's hearts. You see, these four were Divine Ones, the first of their kind actually, but that's not what made them special, for there were plenty of other Divine Ones after them. What made them truly powerful was the fact that they were Elementals, an extremely rare type of being that has only ever shown up in this world twice. This specific kind could control a single element(air, earth/ plant, water, and fire), and when all four of the Elemental's power was combined, it created a fifth element known as light. They spread this creation into all of the brawling being's souls, and soon enough the raging war transformed into a peaceful and tranquil time of prosperity and kindness. One of those heroes actually founded this school, Sir Talerio, I believe that he represented the element of air. Anyway so a prophecy was told about twenty years ago that the darkness would strike again, and that the four Elementals would have to rise once more. We have reason to believe that you four, are the new Elementals. Each of you was chosen because out of everyone on the entire planet, each of you represents a certain element the strongest. I am unsure on which of you represents which element, and so far none of you have shown your true elemental abilities. But I have faith in you all, I have faith that you four will summon the fifth element of light and prevent the darkness from starting the end of the world."
