Chapter 9

Aliens and Dragons

The hallways were packed with students the next morning, my own plain black cloak billowed around my feet and whipped against others as I made my way to breakfast. My brown shoulder-slung book bag bounced against my right thigh. I thought that since this was my first official day of being school that I should put my hair up into a bun, in hopes that I would appear to be academic and that I had a clue on what was going on. Unfortunately for me I am not a flawless model that you see in magazines, and my hair does not blow smoothly in the wind or even stay in a measly bun. However, I refused to give in to my unruly hair and let it ruin this momentous occasion.

I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't even notice that the wave of students had carried me to the dining hall. y friends were seated at the same table as yesterday and they waved for me to join them. They were all in robes and it was evident that they had tried to make themselves look as polished and groomed as possible. Lucy's hair was in two braids with flowers woven into her golden locks.

The orbs appeared again and gave us the food options for breakfast that they could serve us today. I chose toast with waterberry jam. We laughed and talked as we ate our meals, the waterberry jam was almost tasteless and true to its name.

Madame Goldenstone walked over to us in her clicking highheels. "I need to speak with all of you in the corridor immediately." She said and walked off at a brisk pace. We all shared a look and followed.

She was standing in the hallway tapping her foot furiously. "What are these?" She demanded holding out four sheets of paper for us to see.

"Those are our class schedules." Josh stated.

She sighed exasperatedly. "Even after I warned all of you, you still chose two main being classes. Do you want everyone to know what you are?!" She ranted, her voice shrill.

After she had calmed down she continued. "I understand that you all must learn to master both of your beings so I have scheduled for that specific class to be a private lesson." She nodded, and as if on cue the bell rang.

I had spells class or first period. I stopped by a school map and noticed a bunch of smaller, portable maps that I could take neatly placed on the side. I opened one and tried to find the spells room, a bright red line appeared on the map and snaked from my current position to a room labeled 'spells'. More magical objects, what a surprise.

I followed the imaginary trail to a room in the southwest part of school. It was very neat and smelled strongly of lemons. Everything looked very crisp and so precise that I was afraid that if I stepped inside the neatness would be ruined. Posters and diagrams lined the walls and surrounded the black board. The desks were aligned in perfectly straight rows, the teacher's desk was placed in the far right corner and had next to no clutter on its surface.

A woman with her brown hair done into a plain updo was standing in the front of the classroom. Her square spectacles were perched precariously on the edge of her nose and they framed her kind face nicely. Her long teacher's robes didn't seem to have a single wrinkle in them and her plain black shoes were polished to perfection.

She smiled and nodded toward a seat at the very back of the first row. I sat down and dropped my bookbag to the ground as silently as I could, knowing me that didn't happen and the bag dropped to the floor with a loud 'thud'. I grimaced slightly as everyone turned to look at me. I could feel heat rising to my face as I sat down, I tried my best to act like I wasn't fazed by everyone giving me unpleasant looks.

A girl with light blonde hair pulled into a bun sat next to me. Her face was swimming in eyeliner and mascara, not to mention the excessive pink lipstick and blush. A light blue headband wrapped around her head and prevented her large bun from flopping all over the place.
