Josh's POV
The wedding. Today was the day I married Amanda. The only question was if it was the right decision or not. All of our friends were here waiting, I found myself wanting to avoid Emelia. Today would have been our one year but here I am, marrying someone else. The conflict between wanting to run, run away from the chapel and not go through with this. Or staying and dedicating the rest of my life with a girl I believed was my other half.
Buttoning the button on my grey suit, I looked myself in the mirror, fixing my bangs I sighed. This was really it, any minute now, I would walk down the isle and marry her.
Emelia's POV
Today's the day. One year ago I could've sworn I'd be the one marrying Josh. I cant help but look at Amanda and smile. She makes a beautiful bride.
I do my best to smile and be the supportive maid of honor I know I should be. Megan walks up and squeezes my hand. She knows how hard this is for me. Any minute now we'll be walking down the isle. I suddenly feel like I cant breathe.
"Does anyone want anything to drink? I've got some sodas in my car."
"I'll have a coke-zero if you have any! Just hurry back, we can't have the maid of honor go missing!" Amanda says in a bubbly voice. She's honestly getting on my last nerve.
I open the double doors and run right into Josh. "Sorry, didn't see you there..."
"It's alright Melia, are you okay? What's the rush?" Josh asked.
"I just don't want to be late." I say clutching my stomach. All of a sudden my cramps came back. "Thankfully i have an Advil in my purse." , i think to myself.
"I guess i'll see you inside." Josh mumbles.
I grab the drinks and head inside. Almost everyone is ready and Kim is busy helping Amanda finish her makeup. Megan pulls me to the side and shoves a small blue box in my hand.
"I don't know what this is and i don't want to know, but Mike said when you see it you'll understand." Megan whispers.
I turn around and open the box, sitting inside is the necklace Josh gave me with a tiny folded up note. It said, "Emelia, i kept looking for the necklace once everyone had gone to sleep. I know you told me you don't need it anymore, but it was always meant for you... -Josh"
I read the note over and over again, willing myself not to cry. "I can do this." i told myself.
"Alright ladies, let's get this show on the road!" Amanda squealed.
The next few minutes felt like a blur. Now, i'm standing at the front of the church right next to Amanda. She's absolutely glowing, but Josh on the other hand looked like he was going to be sick.
Of course Amanda never noticed, this is her day after all.
I keep doing my best to pay attention to what's going on, but the pain in my stomach just keeps getting worse and worse. My lower back is killing me and my head is spinning. Matt keeps looking over at me, he can obviously tell something is going on.
"Oh god, i think i'm about to get my period!" i whisper to Megan.
"It's okay, i doubt anyone will notice." Megan reassures me.
Josh's POV
The pastor continues speaking and i know Amanda is expectantly looking at me, but all i can see is the pain on Lia's face.
I can tell Megan is concerned as well because Lia's started rocking slightly from left to right. She's as pale as a ghost and looks so frail...
Emelia's POV
My head is pounding now. " I think i need to sit down." i whisper to Megan.
All of a sudden i feel myself falling. My head collides with the hard ground and I'm knocked unconscious...
Josh's POV
I see Lia hit the ground and it feels like the earth is collapsing around me. I can hear Matt in the background screaming for someone to call an ambulance.
"Oh god, she's losing too much blood! what the hell is going on?" Kim shrieks.
"Give her space! i think she might be having a miscarriage.." Megan says.
Matt rushes next to her and holds her head in his arms. I don't know what's going on here but i don't like it. Amanda is sitting to the side having a fit mumbling on and on about the stupid wedding, as if it matters more than our friends life!
The paramedics finally arrive and set Melia on a stretcher. Her eyes flutter open and she reaches out her hand. I step forward to take it, but Matt is already beside her, telling her she'll be alright. I watch him jump into the ambulance behind her and speed off.
I asked Kim, Ian, and Mike to stay behind to help with guests and Amanda. Megan and I jump in her car and speed to the hospital.
We run into the emergency room frantic and out of breath. Megan lies and says Lia's her sister so we can get more info. She'd already been moved to the ICU. She had a miscarriage with hemorrhaging.
Megan looks at me with sad eyes... we both know the baby is mine. This realization hits me and i crumpled against the wall. How can one person lose so much?
I begin sobbing, for what could have and should have been. Lia deserves so much better than this. I need to try and be at least half as strong as her. I need to move on...
Megan and i walk to her room and peer in the doorway. I step forward to enter, but Megan gently grabs my arm and pulls me back. "Just wait." She says.
I feel like i'm watching some kind of fairy tale story, a personal moment that isn't meant to be shared.
Matt is sitting in a chair next to her with his head hung low. he looks horrible. Suddenly, Emelia starts stirring and he jumps up.
"Matt, can you come sit with me..." Melia croaks.
"Of course", Matt says. He climbs onto the bed and scoops her into his arms. She finally lets go of everything shes been holding in and cries into his arms.
"I don't know why this happened, i don't know why my life has to be like this." she sobs.
Matt knows their are no words that can comfort a grief like this, so he just sits their holding her and rocking her back and forth.
I make myself step back and turn to Megan. She leads me away and we head downstairs to the food court.
"We can text Matt in a bit and see when we should come up, but for now lets grab some fries." Megan says.
"Sounds good to me."
Matt's POV
It's getting later out, but i have no intentions of leaving Lia here. Megan and Josh keep texting asking when they can come see her. I told them when she's awake ill let them know, but she keeps waking for only a few minutes then falling right back asleep.
I checked with her nurses to make sure that was okay and nothing else was wrong. They told me she'd been through a horrible trauma and she is exhausted both mentally and physically. I tried getting up to sit in the chair next to her for a while. I thought she might rest better on her own, but she only cries when i leave.
She looks so pale and fragile, but she's still the same beautiful Lia I've always known. I love Josh, but i'm angry and him for what he put her through. Lia is my best friend and she deserves better than him. She deserves better than anyone could offer her... She's just amazing.
Her soft hand closes around mine and she rests her cheek on my chest. I'm comforted by the sounds of her breathing and i'm happy she is sleeping soundly.
I don't know whats come over me lately, but Lia is always on my mind.
I want to care for her, and protect her.
She's my best friend... and i think i'm falling in love with her...
