The Dark or their father

(A/N: OK! I'm sorry for being away for so long. School has been crazy, my family has gone insane, and I haven't been able to think straight for months. I'll try to post as soon as I can.  As for this one shot...I know I'm a bad writer, but I'm still going to put a TRIGGER WARNING on it because it gets a little too close for my own comfort. Enjoy!)

"GET OUT! GET OUT AND DON'T YOU DARE COME BACK YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE!" You scream as you push your, soon to be ex, husband out the door. You had just caught him beating your babies and saw the lines of crack and piles of weed on the table in the living room. You lock the door and ran back to the living room. The sight was absolutely heartbreaking. Your seven year old Merle curled in on himself, blood covering his face, and your two year old Daryl sat next to his big brother crying his eyes out. There was blood pouring out of a grotesque cut under his eye and the dark red spilled on to his small, fragile hands.

"M-Mommy!" Daryl sobbed. It was then that Merle realized you were there. He uncurled himself and you saw multiply cut and bruise all over his face and arms.

"Oh my god, boys, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have left you alone with him. Come here baby." You pick Daryl up and help Merle into the bathroom so you can patch him up. You sat him and Daryl on the edge of the bathtub, got what you needed and to work cleaning and caring for their wounds. There was five minutes of silence until Merle spoke up.

"Mama, I tried to protect him. Pa went after him and I pushed him to get his attention off him. I-I should have d-done more. I shouldn't have let Pa t-touch him. I'm sorry." He started crying. You hug him tight and let him cry into your shoulder.

"Merle, it wasn't your fault. Don't start blaming yourself for something you had no control over. I'm just glad you and your brother are ok." He nods. As he lets go, you wipe his tears away.

"Let's get you to ready for bed boys. It's getting late." You pick up Daryl, get him ready and put the boys to bed. You gently kiss both of their foreheads, turn off the light, close the door, and head off to do a few things before bed. Some of those things were making sure the drugs were disposed of, getting the spare key from the yard, and hiding your husband's keys, which he stupidly left there, and call your father to ask him if he can come over the next day to help properly secure the place.  After hearing what happened to his grandsons, he agreed wholeheartedly.

An hour after heading to bed, you hear screaming from the boys' room. You jump out of bed, grab your gun from the side of your bed, and ran to your kids. You slam the door open and turn on the lights, gun at the ready.

" Boys, what's wrong?" You yell.

Merle was screaming in his sleep and Daryl ran into your arms. You run to Merle's side and woke him up. Both of your kids clung to you. Merle explained in vivid detail the dream he was having. His father had come back in the middle of the night, slit your throat when you tried to defend your kids, stabbed Daryl in the chest and was coming after him. You hugged him close to you to calm him down.

"Why were you screaming Dare? I heard you scream first." You asked your youngest.

"M-mommy I don't like the d-dark. D-daddy might come back." He said. It broke your heart to see your children so scared of the man who help bring them into the world. The man who used to adore his children...the man who turned to drugs the first chance he got.

"Boys, why don't you come sleep in my room with me tonight? I promise I won't let anything else happen to you. I'll protect you." You tell them. They nod and the three of you go to your room. You lay on your back with Daryl on top of you and Merle on your left. You whisper good night to them before they fall asleep. Let's just say you didn't sleep that night, and the gun never left your side.
