I am awoken from my peaceful slumber by Tobias thumping a metal cup on the metal railing.
"Breakfast in 10, and training in 30. Let's go!" Tobias shouts, and I am quick to get up, tie back my messy curls, put on a black muscle top and black yoga pants, and run out to breakfast. I catch up to Tobias, whom is halfway to the dining hall.
"You're quick." Tobias chuckles, and I nod happily. We walk into breakfast, which is as rowdy and chaotic as I imagined a meal time in Dauntless would be.
Tobias leads me to a table with two guys and three girls. One guy and one girl look Tobias' age, and the other three look about a year younger than me.
"Guys, this is Arielle. She's a transfer this year." Tobias introduces me, and everyone smiles and nods.
"Woah, Four, going for initiates already?" One guy says, and Tobias punches him, laughing.
"Arielle, this is my friend Zeke, and that's his brother, Uriah." Tobias tells me, and I smile. Both boys wave and say hello. Zeke has black flat hair, and somewhat tanned skin. His eyes are a deep brown, and his smile is a mile wide. Uriah has black fuzzy hair that is buzzed down at the sides and thick up top. His skin is slightly darker than his brother's, but they share the same eyes.
"And the girls are Shauna, Lynn, and Marlene." Tobias finishes, and I smile politely. Shauna has a brown bob and she has pale skin and brown eyes. Lynn must be her sister because their eyes are also identical. Lynn has a shaved head, with blonde hair just starting to grow back. The last girl, Marlene, has blonde hair with pink streaks. Her eyes are a dark blue, and she has freckles littering her cheeks.
After one more glance, I instantly recognize Shauna and Zeke as the people who laughed at me on the train.
"Fancy meeting you two again." I say, glaring at Zeke and Shauna.
"What are you talking about Elle?" Tobias asks, and before his friends can explain themselves, I start.
"I jumped on the train rather well, and I was proud of myself, but these two started laughing at me. Whatever, its petty. Not a big deal." I say as I see Tobias glaring at them.
"Sorry, Arielle." Zeke mutters, and I'm not expecting anything from Shauna.
"I apologize for my sister being a world class bitch, Arielle." Lynn says, and I smile at her. Shauna kicks her under the table.
"Thanks, Lynn." I say, and eat my breakfast.
As Tobias and I finish, we head to training together. Upon arrival, I see the transfers listening to the man from the roof yesterday. I roll my eyes. Great, I have to deal with him again today.
"What?" Tobias asks, noticing my reaction to Eric.
"He was a royal ass on the roof yesterday. I don't even know who he is, not that I care." I mutter, ignoring my drooling thoughts of him. Ugh!
"Well, heads up, Arielle, you should care. His name is Eric, and he's a leader here in Dauntless. He can make your life a living hell with one raise of his finger." And speaking of assholes, he begins walking towards us, with a pissed off look on his face. "Please don't tell me..." Tobias trails off. He already knows that I did something to piss off the King of Asshats.
"Four, I didn't realize you and this initiate were together." Eric says to Tobias, and speaks of me like I am nothing more than something stuck on the bottom of his boot. This initiate, who does he think he is?!
Just as I am about to explode, much to Eric's amusement, Tobias cuts in and saves the day.
"Eric, this is Arielle. And no, we aren't together. Arielle and I have been friends for years." Tobias says calmly.
"A Stiff and a Nose? How did you manage that?" Eric laughs dryly. I feel like exploding, but I manage to simmer down enough to cut him a response.
"It doesn't matter all that much, does it Eric? Oh, and remind me again, weren't you a Nose too? And weren't you beaten by a Stiff?" I ask him sweetly, and saying he's angry is an understatement. Tobias snorts, and Eric looks like he wants to rip both our heads off.
"You better watch your mouth, initiate. I won't tell you again." Eric says, and he stomps away, to supervise the other Transfers.
"Sorry, when was the first time?!" I call after him, and in return I get the middle finger. So childish. This whole interaction makes Tobias die laughing.
"You better get training, or you won't last much longer." Tobias finishes his laughing fit, and resumes his role as instructor. I take a spot beside Blake, and we begin throwing knives.
Shockingly, I'm amazingly talented with a knife. Every one I throw lands dead centre. I am finished earlier than the others, so I help Blake. She is hitting the target, just a little further from the centre than desired. I correct her position and she automatically begins throwing better. I see Eric coming, which makes Blake tense up.
"Relax, B. Tension doesn't help."
"You're correct, initiate. It doesn't. Now go get your knives and show me again." Eric says smugly. I look around, and everyone is still throwing.
"No." I tell him. Anger flashes behind his eyes, but his smugness comes back to surface.
"No? Are you afraid, initiate?" Eric taunts. I may walk on thin ice with him, but there is no way I will risk my life to prove I'm not scared.
"I would like to keep my body intact, thank you." I reply quickly. His anger resurfaces, and it looks like its going to stay.
"Initiates, stop what you're doing. Your fellow initiate decided to make the mistake of talking back to her leader. Let me show you all what happens when you decide to cross me." Eric explains. "Go stand in front of the target." He demands, and I find myself swallowing my fear and walking away from everyone. I stand in front of the target, and watch Eric prepare five knives.
"No blinking, flinching, or closing your eyes. One wrong move, and you're out, understand?" He asks.
"I don't think you could make yourself any clearer, Mr. Leader." I talk back, and no sooner do I finish than the first knife is planted in between my legs, right between my calves. Eric is extremely angry, and I just hope he still has a sliver of kindness left towards me to spare my life.
The second and third knives brush the tops of my shoulders. I find myself staring into Eric's blue-grey eyes, and somehow, someway, his anger fades away as I stare longer.**Eric's POV**
I throw the first knife, and her eyes refuse to leave mine. Her seductive, beautiful sapphire eyes. Ugh, no, get a hold of yourself!
I throw the next two right above each shoulder. Serves you right, you little witch. The fourth one finds itself right above her scalp, and the last one grazes her ear. She instantly reaches up to her lobe, and her fingers are dotted with blood.
"You dare challenge me again and it will be worse than a couple spots of blood." I threaten, but my heart isn't in it. I would never hurt her. I may be a cruel leader, but this redhead has worked her way under my skin, and I don't think I mind.
She walks away from the target, and Four takes the initiates to the rooftop to practice with the guns. Something deep down tells me she's going to be really good at that too.
I follow after the group of Transfers, and sure enough, everyone else is struggling except for Arielle. She is helping her blonde friend from Candor, Blake, I think.
This girl won't be getting out of my head any time soon.
