it's Friday night when Grayson decided to play Nerve. it was an up and coming game that everyone was bubbling about, Grayson wasn't going to do it until his brother, Ethan dared that he would last the longest. but really, who would last the longest?
I knew that what I was doing to Ethan, was wrong. I knew that each time I'm seen with Ava, Ethan heart breaks more. I would classify us as even, since he's been hanging out with May.
May and I had dated back in freshman year. I admit that May was my first ever love, and that I was madly in love with her. I'd do anything to make sure she never had a bad day. But little did I know that she would bring a bad day for me.
That Saturday morning started differently than every other day, usually either Ethan or I would wake up first and instantly turn our xbox on. Which would always lead to the other sibling to join in. However, that Saturday morning May had suggested that she and I would hang out. Obviously I had said 'yes' which lead to Ethan being in a sour mood, since I had promised to hang out with him.
Our conversation had went from being fascinated with their future plans and colleges. Thinking about applying in the same school so we'd see each other, all the cliché love stories. I really believed that we would last, that was until she confessed her love for someone else.
To be precise, she confessed about having a crush on Ethan and have had a crush on Ethan since we've started dated. Explained that the only reason she said "yes" was to get as close to Ethan as she possibly could. My heart had never been more heartbroken and in pain ever. Well, not since Ivy's death.
That same day, I broke it off with May. There was no correct way on explaining to Ethan just how they broke up. My only option was to lie, if I couldn't have May neither can Ethan. It was pure logic. I went off and told Ethan that she had cheated on me with Anderson.
Which at the time seemed like a perfect explanation as to why he and Anderson were done talking. I didn't feel like clarifying specifically why I had broken both ties around the same time, so I mashed them up together. Worked out great.
Now here sat I on his bed, wanting ensure that what happened in ninth wouldn't repeat this senior year. I was thinking about messaging Ava in time before she ever thought about Ethan. Meaning making Ethan out to be a horrible guy before he even gets the courage to ask Ava out.
I pulled my phone out of my jean pocket and sent Ava a message. I hoped that she would gladly accept the offer of the chance to chat. Just her and me.

I arrived at The Hub, five minutes later than I had meant to be. First, it was because of the fact I had no idea what to wear. It wasn't necessary a date but I had a feeling Ava would be see me differently. Secondly, I was so nervous of how the conversation would go down that I got lost. Twice.
As I strolled into the busy restaurant, I was greeted by a fellow worker. She flashed a smile at me as she continued walking towards the other half, where she handed a customer a menu. I, however, walked the opposite direction where I came face-to-face with the back of Ava's head.
I walked behind, slowly approaching her before scaring her. She yelped, almost dropping her sandwich. She turned around where she glared annoyingly at me. She playfully shoved me, groaning at how easy it was to scare her.
"Hey, bud!" I exclaimed. I slid into the booth facing her, placing my phone and keys on the table.
"You're such a dick for scaring me."
"You're a wimp for being easily scared." I remarked.
"Whatever," She whined. "Let's talk though!"
"How we have small talk that builds up to be big talk?" I offered. In all of honesty, I could not imagine starting up the conversation about Ethan and expecting her to not react.
"Sure."
"So where do you plan to see yourself in five years?" I asked.
"I'm hoping i'll be in school, majoring in medical." She beamed. "What about you?"
"Somewhere big, hopefully." I laughed. "What's your favorite color?"
"I can never decide! I'll have to say clear."
"That's Ethan's favorite color too." I joked. I saw as Ava's face turned into disgust at the mention of my brother's name.
"I think we had enough small talk, are you going to tell me what's up with your brother?" She pushed.
"I just want you to know that I'm coming from a place where I care about you," I sighed. "Ethan has said some pretty rude things..."
"Of you? What siblings don't talk bad about each other?" Ava gulped.
"No, you." I replied monotoned.
"W-What?" She stammered, stunned. She collected herself, going from surprised to a stern face. Almost like she was pissed about Ethan having the nerve to talk about her like that.
"What did he say?" She requested.
"Said you were a bitch and a slut. Really made sure I understand that he wouldn't kiss you out of a dare, implied you've been around town." I explained nonchalantly.
"Honestly, I'm suddenly not feeling bad about you trashing his locker." She giggled.
"But I regret it."
"Why? He deserves it." She shrugged. "Truly I'm going to give him a piece of my mind."
In one swift movement, she slid her phone out of her pocket and placed it on the table. I watched as she opened her phone and entered her iMessage. She started a new conversation with "Ethan" and began typing.

She slid her phone towards me, letting me peer at the messages. I read the messages to myself and felt bad. I had been giving poor Ethan shit and now convincing his crush that he hated her. And it was all my fault for letting a game I once said I wasn't falling for, control my life.
