Mathew
"They're dead."
I heard my son-in-law announce the news to my granddaughter in silence. I stood by the wall in the kitchen, listening in on the conversation happening only a few feet away. I preferred to stay hidden, not wanting to interrupt or cause any distractions from what needed to be said.
"Excuse me?"
This time I had to take a peek. I stretched my neck and peered around the corner, sighing at the sight of Blue's confused face. This was only the beginning of what's to come.
"Blue–"
"What?"
Shawn became choked up and shook his head. I was surprised. In the many years I've known him, I've never seen Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter cry.
"What are you talking about?" Blue asked harshly. She narrowed her eyes at her father and balled up her fists. "Why are you lying?"
Shawn began speaking again, but Blue cut him off before he could even formulate a sentence.
"Why are you lying?!" She yelled. She jumped off the couch and stormed over to me, pushing Shawn out of the way. "Give me your phone. I want to call my mom." She demanded.
"Mathew." I heard.
I glanced at Shawn and shook my head. He seemed to be defeated. Blue was stubborn like Beyoncé, and she wasn't listening to a word that came out of that man's mouth. While the tragic news is certainly hard to believe, she isn't making the situation any easier.
"Blue, I need you to listen to me for a minute alright? Stop doing all of this–" I lightly tapped her lips, only to be pushed away. I released an irritated sigh and looked her straight in the eye. "Your mother has passed away in a plane crash. She will not be answering this phone. You can scream and yell all the hell you won't, but it won't change a damn thing. Do you understand?"
Blue stared at me hard. She didn't say anything, she just glared. We stood in silence for nearly three minutes before she spoke.
"You're lying."
I sighed and brought out my phone. I clicked on the police report sent to me and handed the phone to Blue, who was eagerly waiting for my next move. I originally didn't want her or Shawn reading the gruesome details, but I couldn't think of another way to help her understand what has happened. Her stubbornness and denial had to be shut down somehow.
I watched the light quickly leave Blue's eyes as she read over the police report. The tears came soon after, and her small frame started to shake vigorously. Shawn cautiously approached her and attempted to comfort her with a hug, but she roughly pushed him away.
"I WANT MY MOMMY!" She wailed. She grabbed the closest thing she could, which happened to be a vase, and threw it across the room. Before she was able to cause anymore damage, Shawn managed to pull her into his arms and hold her back tightly.
"LET ME GOOOOOO!!!" Blue screamed. I leaned back against the wall and waited for her father's next move. "LEAVE ME ALOOONNEEEE!!!! I WANT MY MOMMY!!!" She sobbed. She fought Shawn hard, but luckily he's much stronger than her, and he was able to hold her back.
"I know Blue. I know baby girl." I heard Shawn tell her. Blue only cried harder, but she did hold her father tighter. I nodded in approval. He was doing better.
