‘You can’t take her away from me I’ll make sure she is safe no matter what’. It was my mother again. She was yelling at that man, the stranger, that wanted to take me away the one that was going to kill me. It didn’t make any sense to me. Why would anybody want to kill a baby and more importantly, why would anybody want to kill me?
‘Where is the child? I don’t want to make this any harder for you, give her to me.’
‘Never.’
‘Very well I’ll find her myself’.
‘I’ve warned you, you will regret this’.
I woke up the next morning to find Rachel looking at me, talk about lack of privacy. I looked at my watch it was seven o’clock, time for me to begin my first real day at this never ending torment called school.
We walked down the hallway heading for English Lit. class. It was my first lesson for the day and I was going to make sure I went through it unnoticed. My mind drifted back to my dream, I’d had the same dream for as long as I could remember and lately it was more frequent and vivid but I still couldn’t make sense of any of it. It all felt so real.
We entered the class and found our way to our seats, I didn’t come to class on time so there were only three free seats left, I chose the one in front of a blonde staring out the window which put me in the third row. The class was being conducted by a Mr. Thomson. He was tall and smiled a lot. He was quite shaky but not really noticeable. I took my time analyzing him, he seemed friendly enough if not a little bit awkward. I liked Eng. Lit., it was one class that let me escape into a different world of history and poets and everything that wasn’t going on now. Then I heard my name being called.
“Miss Lexis, won’t you come up here and introduce yourself to the class?” So much for going through the day unnoticed I thought. The whole class was looking at me and I felt a bit out of place. I didn’t know anyone here except Rachel and I just met her. New beginnings I kept chanting in my head as I walked up to the front of the class, then I introduced myself to the class. It was a brief introduction and when I was done I went back to my seat.
I settled back in hoping to blend into the background then that boy, Tyler, walked into the class. I was wondering why he easily caught my eye even though I didn’t think I was interested in him, and like the complete idiot I was I was staring at him, again.
“Ah yes Tyler you are late, again. What’s your excuse this time?”
“I was out hunting.”
“Oh yes of course and I suppose you caught something good. If I may, where exactly did you go hunting seeing as there are no animals in the school?”
“I jumped over the school fence and went into the woods”. The class laughed, but he didn’t sound like he was joking.
“You have heard the rumors of the wild creature roaming those woods and in your good sense you went there alone. Hunting. Are you aware of the fact you could have been seriously injured or worse if your story is true?”
“Yes sir, I’m aware”.
He headed for his seat and for a brief second he looked at me and at that instant I knew I was just like him, lost.
The day went on with more classes and the more the classes the more boring they were, except for English Lit.
School was over for the day and finally I was going to be stuffing my face with something good at lunch, for a school they served pretty nice meals, sometimes even better than what you could find in restaurants, but then again I didn’t eat at top of the line restaurants.
