Chapter six
We begin to walk through the forest, trying to relocate our position before the attack. I don't know why, but Jason left the green bag back at the cave. We brought the not-so-big weapons with us, like I had my knife and a gun and he had a knife as well. He did lose it though, while we were running through the forest. But our food and water and a small supply of clothes were in that green bag, we need it. This one small bag could be life or death. And Jason forgot it. "Why didn't you just bring the bag?" I ask him as we walk through the forest, looking for anything in particularly eye catching and noticeable that we might recognize to find our way back.
"Because I didn't want to lose it," he replied. I couldn't help but snort a laugh at this, we just lost it anyway. I saw from the corner of my eye how he looked down, embarrassed.
"Hey," I start, grabbing his arm to stop him. We both stop dead in our tracks and look at each other, "I'm sorry. I get what you were doing, you thought ahead. You were worried that what happened would happen and we could drop it while running like with the knife. Except you didn't think about us not finding our way back. But it's not totally your fault, either way the bag would most likely be lost. At least this way we know it's in the cave," I say to reassure him. He nods and we start walking again.
"You really should clean that cut," he tells me, both of us looking ahead at the trees and leaves surrounding us.
"I know. It burns," I say. "I wish I had some water to clean it out," I say with a smirk on my face. I feel him playfully punch me lightly on the arm, I hear him laugh slightly.
"I really am sorry about the bag," he says.
"I know. I was only kidding," I reassure him. We walk in silence for a bit and I see an opening ahead of us. I begin to jog and slowly go faster until I'm almost sprinting toward the light. I realize it's the end of the forest and I take a deep breath, relaxing. Jason then walks about of the forest as well.
"Is this the right place? The right side of the forest, I mean," he says.
"I really hope so," I say. I look around and see a pile of leaves and walk closer to it. I then see a leaf with blood on it, the leaf that I wiped the blood from my knife off, where I killed the rabbit. I walk back over to Jason, "it's the right side. We made it," I say. We both smile and walk in the direction of the cave.
After what felt like twenty minutes of walking, we begin to see objects leading us closer to the cave. Then we see it, the cave holding the green bag. We walk up to it and Jason grabs the bag, "I got it this time," he says.
"I sure hope so," I say. "Because I'm not doing this again,"
"So should we stay here at the cave or look for safer and bigger shelter? I mean, this cave is too small to get good sleep in but we can hunt. What do you think, Aubrey?" Jason asks me. I look around and at the same spot that Jason and I looked at this morning before we went hunting, the sun and clouds and grass. How beautiful it was. Either trickery or hope.
"We should go," I answer. "But we need to find a place within a couple hours before the sun starts to go down, we would need a good amount of time but we need the time to confine and protect our shelter once we find it. We need to find a place to sleep soon,"
"Let's go then," Jason replies. And we were walking down the path again. Except this time the opposite direction from which we went hunting.
We were walking for a long time down the path before the forests began disappearing from around us. "We're back out in the country area," I say. "Maybe some crops are okay to eat. If they're even here,"
