Chapter Thirteen

Dylan, Jason, and I soon arrive at the data lab. We see through the clear glass three people talking amongst themselves: Libby, Dr.Reynolds, and another man in a white lab coat. Dylan opens the door for Jason and I and we walk in, Dylan coming last and closing the glass door behind him. "Hello, Dr.Reynolds," starts Dylan. "The new people have a few questions to ask of you," then Dr.Reynolds, Libby, and the other man look at Jason and me. Jason and I then look at each other, not knowing who should speak first.

"Well, Dr.Reynolds," Jason says. "We would like some clarification on why locking us in that room to die was necessary,"

"And we would like to know how you guys think you could cure this and how you people know more than anyone else about the virus," I interrupt. Jason nods and looks over Dr.Reynolds, waiting for him to speak.

"I will answer the boy's question first," he states. "That was very necessary, actually, but I do understand how you would not see how. You see, you Aubrey, told us that you could speak to The Different-"

"The Gone," Dylan interrupts. I look at Dylan and give him a sheepish smile while Dr.Reynolds looks at him in more of a perplexed way. "Please go with it for now, Dr.Reynolds,"

"Alright," agrees Dr.Reynolds. "You told us that you could speak to The Gone, well, we wanted to make sure you were telling the truth for any reason you may have been lying. But we would've put you in that room anyway. We wanted to see your fighting, thinking, and overall survival skills." explains Dr.Reynolds.

"Dylan told us this already," says Jason. "Couldn't you have done this a different way?" He asks. "Also, how would know if we were telling the truth or not if you can't hear them?"

"These are great questions,Jason," says Dr.Reynolds. "But you see, when Aubrey lifted the knife from the box and over her shoulder to kill The Different, I mean, The Gone, she paused and stared at it, waiting for something only she understood. Then she looked around for the pipe as if following directions. Your guys's actions led us to believe you were not lying. Lucky for you, because if you were you would be right back outside again and away from regular human life and shelter once more. You had options on the possible outcomes; you could've died, you could've been kicked out of the Sanctuary if you survived, or you could be taken care of. You chose the best option, the third option. Therefore explaining the name Fate Room, it declares your fate."

"And how about my question? The one about how you guys imagine yourselves curing the plague and how you people know so much," I ask.

"Ah yes, of course," Dr.Reynolds starts. "We know more about these creatures than anyone else, except The Gone know just as much and you could too if they told you, because we created them."

"What?" I ask, breathless and bewildered.

"We all were a big group of scientists with myself in charge and Libby second in charge. We had so many great creations and never got credited with anything. So, we created The Gone and then made a cure so that we could only let the virus spread very little, only enough to get the word and a little panic out. Then, we would release the cure and everyone would finally appreciate us. It was a silly idea, but we released the virus anyways. We tried to cure everyone, but the cure only cured them half way, it didn't fully cure them. So that's how they can speak to people, they are cured mentally but not physically. We would take it back in a heartbeat, it was an act of vain. But it's too late, so we can only try to fully cure The Gone." Dr.Reynolds explains. I feel my jaw drop and immediately close it shut. But then I must ask a question,

"So why only me? Why can't The Gone speak to Jason or you guys?" I ask.

"We have not yet figured that out," Libby chimes in. "But you can speak with them. And so could Jim..." She trails off.
