Chapter Fifteen

I walk into the room that Jason and I have been staying in and see Jason sitting on his bed with his legs hanging over the edge. He looks over at me when I enter and gets up in a rush. He then just looks at me for a brief moment and I stand still, us both staring at one another. "Well," Jason starts.

"Jason," I say in a hushed voice. "They lied to us,"

"What?" He asks in more of an alert tone this time.

"Libby, she," I pause for a brief moment. "She told me that the people here don't need a small portion of my blood, but they need all of it. It's called draining people. They're going to kill me, Jason," I say. I feel the tears dwelling in my eyes and I don't fight them, honestly, I don't have the strength.

"No, they're not," Jason says a little too calmly.

"How so?" I ask between breaths.

"Because we're leaving tonight," he says. My eyes grow huge and he nods and walks over to me. He stops right in front of me and gazes at me, and me to him. "They are not lying a finger on you, they won't even have the chance," he says. I hug him and he hugs me back. I close my eyes and feel the tears trickle down my cheeks from the inside out.

"But, what if Libby is lying," I say while we hug. Jason pulls away and looks at me, still holding onto my waist.

"What reason would she have for that?" He asks me.

"Well, I don't know, but I don't trust her. I trust no one here but you. She told me they need my blood for the cure. I don't know how bad of an idea this is, I mean, my simple life for so many others. Isn't it worth it? Even if they are lying or the cure doesn't work, it's a shot to save humanity, Jason," I say. He looks at me and begins to cry too, but he wipes away the tears from my cheeks as his tears roll onto his cheeks.

"Don't, Aubrey," he says in a hushed tone.

"But the cure-"

"You promised!" He shouts. I look at him, wide eyed. "You promised you wouldn't leave me, and I wouldn't you. You promised me that, Aubrey, don't fall short of that promise. I need you with me, Aubrey, or else I will fall apart." Jason explains. His eyes become blood shot and I realize something, there's always too much crying. Too many tears. I'm fed up with it, he can't buy me over because he's crying, it doesn't work like that.

"Save it, Jason," I say with a stern look on my face.

"What?" He responds.

"Save it. This is my decision, not yours. It's my fate in my own hands and I need to know more about what is happening. We are in the shadows, Jason. I can't live here knowing these people are keeping something from me. I don't know how you cope with this, but I'm going to confront the people here and get some actual answers." I say half shouting. He looks over me, as if what he says will ever change my decision I've already made.

"Be careful, alright?" Jason responds. I nod and walk to the door. But before I open it I look back and see Jason standing there by the bed.

"You know I'm going to be back, right? I'm not going to just leave and let them take all of my blood without saying goodbye. You know that, right?" I ask. He nods with a gleam of sadness on his face.

"I know you all too well, Aubrey. I wouldn't doubt for a second the fact that you would go and kill yourself to save humanity right now. Except I do doubt it for one reason, you didn't say goodbye. And that I know you would do," he says all too calmly.

"Yeah," I say in a hushed tone. "You do know me pretty well." Then I turn and walk out the door to find Libby and get some answers.

As soon as I leave the room I see Libby talking to Dr.Reynolds in the hallway. I walk up to them and hear Dr.Reynolds say something, "But we have tried everything, Libby. This is our only option," I walk up beside them and they turn to me. But then Libby turns back to Dr.Reynolds and says something to him,
