When Kendra showed up a few minutes later she had Haley and Erika in tow. They all greeted me cheerfully with hugs and sounds of delight when I let them in.
"Oh, my gosh, Jen, I love your hair like this!" Erika said to me excitedly, tugging on my high ponytail as she stepped inside. She was dressed in a white maxi dress and her makeup was looking flawless.
"Thank you." I smiled. As silly as it sounded, I really wanted her to like me and to hear her praise made me feel...happy.
Gone was any tension that I'd felt before. It was like yesterday had never happened.
"I texted you guys," I said to Haley.
Haley glanced up from the figurine of a puppy on my desk she'd been playing with. "Oh, I didn't get it."
She said it with such ease and without hesitation that she couldn't have been lying. I glanced at Erika and she raised her brows. "I didn't get any texts either."
Her eyes sort of dared me to question it further. It honestly wasn't even worth the fight. I took in a deep breath. "I just wanted to say that there is nothing going on between me and Gavin."
Erika gave me a blank look but didn't say anything in response.
"So if you like him or whatever..."
She started shaking her head.
"...It's okay with me...? No... you're shaking your head. What does this mean?"
She started laughing. "Oh, you silly goose, I do not like that boy. He's not my type at all. First off I don't do light skin boys."
"Oh!" Was this really the case? Had Gavin been wrong about this whole thing?
I don't even know why I listened to him.
"It's just that last night you guys were acting kind of off..." I let my voice trail off a bit.
"Really?" Haley piped in. "Other than the fact that you were like crazy late, last night was fine."
I felt a little weird about that last comment but I decided to let it go. I had made them wait for almost an hour. At least now I knew we were fine. Maybe the tension had all been in my head.
I looked over at Kendra who'd been awfully quiet from the moment she'd stepped inside. "You okay, Kendra?"
"Yeah, girl, I'm good. Just thinking..."
"I hope not about that creepy RA of yours," Erika joked, putting her arms around Kendra affectionately.
"He's not creepy!" Kendra was feigning offense but I could tell by the way her eyes lit up she knew it was just teasing.
"Oh, my gosh, Jenny, he totally is," Haley exclaimed, grabbing me by the hand and turning me towards her. "We finally got to meet him. He's like a super senior."
"He's literally the same age as my father," Erika added with a giggle.
"He is not!" Kendra laughed. "He's only 25."
Kendra looked to me for approval. But I was, of course, the voice of reason.
"He's practically a dinosaur."

The next two weeks went by pretty smoothly. Wake up, go to class, go to the dining hall, then back to my room to study. These events were of course interlaced with hangout sessions with my friends and frequent and awkward run-ins with Gavin.
