My first semester at college was going by pretty smoothly. I was managing to keep up my grades in all of my classes. Even Calculus, which I thought I'd be struggling in, wasn't kicking my butt. It had already been six weeks since school had started. Midterms were coming up and the girls and I had decided to get a kick start on studying. We were in my dorm room chilling after all our classes were over for the day. We should have already started but we'd ended up having too much energy to study so you know how that goes.
Haley was blasting hood music from her laptop while Kendra was rapping a wild and violent freestyle. Erika was standing in front of my full-length mirror working on how to get her butt to pop.
"The girls in the videos have all the talent." She ruminated out loud.
"I think if you'd just work on your core you'd have it already." Haley jumped off of my bed and stood beside Erika trying to demonstrate the right booty popping technique. She was like the girls in the videos.
I stared on in amazement before shaking my head to get myself to focus at the task at hand. My desk was a mess. I couldn't study with it looking like who done did it and why. When had it gotten that bad anyway?
I rearranged all my pencils and pens back into their proper storage containers and threw away the candy wrappers littering its surface. There was also a to go box from only God knows when. I had to throw it away before Strauss got back and started complaining about the smell. Speaking of the devil, I glanced over at Gavin's side of the room. He was gone at the moment. Probably in class or something. I only saw him at night time when he finally got in from doing whatever it was he did all day. Some nights we'd grab dinner from Solaris and eat it in our room and on Thursdays when we had our flag football games we always stayed up late trash talking about how we'd played.
"Whatcha doing, Jenny?" Kendra asked coming up beside me. It seemed she had finished putting on her rather impressive rap show. She was definitely ready for the cypher.
Or at least to release her first mixtape.
"I'm just trying to clean up a bit before we start studying." I had moved onto my bed. I started folding my pink comforter that I hadn't spread since the first week of school when I'd given up the pretense that I made my bed every day. At home I only made my bed after I changed my sheets.
"Are you done with your desk?" Kendra asked from behind me.
"Yeah, why?" I turned around to look at her.
"There's all these papers behind it." She stooped down and maneuvered her tiny frame under my desk. She pulled out a bunch of crumpled papers and flyers and tossed them to me.
I opened each one of them up and dumped the ones that were obviously crap. As I reached the bottom of the pile I paused staring at one of the papers. It was a pink slip so it stood out from the rest.
"What's that?" Kendra asked peering over to see what I was staring at.
It was the room change request form.
Erika and Haley, tired from all their dancing, came over to see what we were doing.
"Is that the room change form thingy?" Erika asked me, her smooth brown skin glowing from the 'workout' she'd just had. "It looks like the one I had to fill out to get out of Mercurius." Erika had moved out of that hell hole the second week of school. She was now living in the same dorm as Haley. Ah, the lap of luxury.
"Yeah, it is. I guess I never did turn it in." It was also not even filled out.
"You guess? It's been months!" Erika scoffed incredulously. "Do you like living with a boy, or something?"
