Chapter 5:

My head is starting to pound with all of this crying. I step off the couch and go upstairs to get dressed. I can't let John affect me like this. Yes, we have been together for 7 months, but I have to be strong and move on. I can't let him have a hold over me.

Once I shower, tame my hair, and get dressed I grab my keys and head out. I mean it's Saturday afternoon, I might as well.

I drive up to a cafe and decide to get something for Ava as well. When I walk in I can't believe my eyes. I see Jake? At a little cafe? He is sitting by himself at a table by himself with a cup of coffee. And he's reading a book! Oh my god! I walk by and he looks up and shoves his book in his bag. He grabs my arm and stops me.

"Don't tell anyone!"

"Alright, alright." I say putting my hands up in defense.

"I wasn't planning on it."

"Good."

As I start to walk away he grabs my arm, whirls me around and stands up. I never noticed how tall he is. He is like a full head above me.

"You might as well sit with me while you're here." He says with a smirk.

I start to protest when he pulls out the chair across from him for me. Wow, the bad boy is a gentleman. I slowly sit down and scoot in and wait for him to say something.

"What brings you here?"

"Well, Ava was hungry and I wanted to get away from all my misery and get my mind off it."

"Oh."

"Yep."

Well, this is awkward. I start to stand up when a look of confusion flashes in his eyes.

"Where are you going?" He asks.

"I'm just going to order the food for Ava."

"Oh, yeah, cool."

I just giggle and walk away. I order and stand at the counter waiting for my food. When the employee hands me a white paper bag with Ava's sandwich and my iced tea I head back to the table where Jake is sitting.

"So what book were you reading?" I say with a grin on my face.

"The Great Gatsby." His cheeks turn a rosy color but then immediately change back to normal.

"That is a great book, that was one book my father have me a long time ago. I read it all the time."

Suddenly my pocket is vibrating. I pick up my phone and look at the caller ID. It reads Ava<3.

"I better take this." I say and stand up. I start to walk outside and answer it.

"Hello?" I say into the receiver.

"Bea where are you? You've been gone for an hour and a half!"

Has it really been that long? I look at the clock hanging on the wall. Two thirty. She was right.

"Sorry Ava I'll be home in five."

"Okay, see you soon."

With that I hang up, slip my phone into my pocket and head back inside.

"I have to go. Ava needs me."

An emotion shows in his eyes but flashes away before I can tell what it is.

"Alright, see you in school."

"See you."

I pull out of the parking lot and head home.

I wonder if his friends know he reads classic books like the Great Gatsby. Or any books for that matter. I wonder why he is so rough at school but nice and smart when nobody is around. This boy is a mystery that I am dying to solve.
