Chapter 15:

One Week Later

I walked into the hospital, my hand interlocked with Jake's. We stepped through the front entrance and went to the elevator. After leaving the elevator, we took a right and walked down the hallway. We eventually made it to the last room on the left, Ava's room.

When we opened the door, I saw a tall boy sitting by her bed talking to her and stroking her hand. I analyzed his face and my jaw dropped. It was Zach, her ex-boyfriend. I hated that boy with a burning passion. He was terrible to Ava. He came over to our house at 2 in the morning, drunk, and took Ava's car. Ava had gone with him so that she could take her car back home. She insisted on driving but he wouldn't let her. On their way to Zach's house he crashed the car into a palm tree. Ava broke her wrist in the crash. And that is the reason I hate him. I looked over at Jake and his jaw was clenched.

"Um, Ava?" I asked.

"Oh, Bea, hi!" Ava cried, not acknowledging her "new" friend. Zach looked over at me and gave me a shy smile. I glared back at him and he turned away.

"Ava, what is that doing here?" I pointed at him.

"Zach?"

"Yeah, whatever."

"Well, he came to support me in a time of need." Ava explained.

"Wow, that isn't the most cliche movie line I've ever heard. Now, Zach, family only right now. Goodbye!" I said blandly.

Zach stood up and looked at Jake. "Look's like we gotta go, buddy." He smirked at him.

I gave Jake a look saying, If you don't rip his vocal chords out right now, I WILL. "I mean, unless you and Bea are planning on getting married and having kids. Well, if Bea could just get laid. And who kno-" I lunged at Zach, but Jake got there first. Ava sat there, astonished. I knew there was nothing she could do, and frankly, I was happy.

Jake hit Zach on the right side of his jaw. He staggered backward and grunted. Jake tackled Zach  and they were both throwing punches.

'BEA, DO SOMETHING!!" Ava screamed.

She looked terrified so I decided I should stop them. I went over and grabbed the collar of Zach's shirt. I pulled bacwards as hard as I could and he came tumbling backwards.

"Okay, okay. Break it up. Stop punching." I said calmly. Jake got up on his feet and glared at Zach.

"You," I pointed at Jake. "Sit down." I turned around to Zach." You, get the hell out of here before I rip your adam's apple out and tape it to your forehead. Got it?" He looked at me and then Ava. "Okay." he mumbled. Then he scrambled out of the room.

I sat down with Ava. She started to gently sob and I stroked her hair. We didn't say anything. Jake sat in the chair in the corner. I stood up and turned around. I picked up the daisies I got for Ava and put them on her bedside. I wanted to cry along with her, but I knew I shouldn't. Not until I wasn't the oldest girl in the room. We both missed Mom. I put my hand on her leg, not remembering that part of it was gone. Ava yelped in pain, and I squeezed her hand.

Sarah and Trish, my sisters, walked in and saw us. I turned around and ran to hug them. Jake looked up from his little spot in the corner and his eyes widened. We all saw him and I said, "What's wrong?"

"Oh, nothing, it's just that YOU ALL LOOK THE SAME." He said with a little chuckle. We all laughed and I was glad that he was there to lighten the mood.

For the rest of the day, we all talked to Ava and held the baby. We finally left at nine, when visiting hours were over.
