PROLOGUE

It was a cool crisp autumn evening. Fallen leaves rustled on the forest floor. Up on a hill a black shadow cast its self on the damp earth. A tortoiseshell and white she cat padded down a mossy hill. As she climbed, two tiny kits followed her lead. A third kit struggled to the top of the hill. Gasping for air, the tiny kit collapsed on the hill.
"Mama," it cried "My legs hurt!"
The tortoiseshell looked back and climbed back up the hill. She grasped the scruff of the tiny kit and carried it down.
"Where are we going mom?" asked one of the older looking kits.
"Is it fun?" interrupted the second kit.
The tortoiseshell sighed "You'll be going to a place th..that is v..very fun." she struggled to meow as a tear crept out of her eye and fell to the ground.
They crossed a river bank. The rushing sound of the running water was the only sound they heard other than the wind howling in their ears. As they walked they came into a marsh full of mud and frogs. The she-cat walked until one of her kits screamed. She spun around faster than Monster on the Thunderpath.
"What's wrong?!" yowled the queen in horror.
"The Green Beastie thing jumped out at me mommy!" wailed the kit.
"It was a frog silly!" yowled another kit.
The queen sighed with relief and turned around and kept walking.
"Let's keep moving kits."
* * * *
"This is it kits," said the queen as they stopped walking. The place was full of reeds and water.
A strange cat appeared from inside the reeds, frightening one of the kits.
"These," he looked down at the kits. "are the kits you were telling me about?"
"Yes" replied the queen.
Another cat appeared from inside the bushes, a bit smaller than the first.
"Mama," said one of the kits as it looked at the strange cats. "Who are these cats and why are they here?"
The queen put down the kit she was carrying, as she did she sighed.
"These cats are here to take you to your ne-new ho-home" said the queen as she took off leaving her kits as she ran.
"Mama!" yowled one of her kits, running after her.
Keep running, keep running, the queen said to herself.
"Owe!" yowled the kit.
The queen turned around to see her kit caught in a tree root.
"Help me mama!!" yowled the kit to her mother.
The queen stood in horror, watching her kit struggling to set itself free. Finally the kit broke free and started running but the strange cat scooped her up in his mouth.
The queen began running again, crying as she ran. In the distance she heard the kit again.
"Let me go!" yowled the kit. "I want my mama!"
The kits voice faded as she ran further and further from it. Tears poured out of her eyes.
You did the right thing, the she-cat said to herself. They're safe now from their father's treachery...
