Chapter 2: Introducing the Chosen One

Mal's POV

Xane looks at me and asks, "One of y'all's cars or mine?"

"What," I ask confused.

"Y'all don't know where we're going," he reminds me. "And I can't just tell y'all. Not 'less you agree to work with us."

"Then, what do you recommend, Oh Secret One?" I fold my arms across my chest.

"If y'all don't mind me driving, then I'd suggest we take one of y'all's, so y'all can easily leave if ya want to."

"I really don't want to do this," I complain.

"I do know." A thoughtful look crosses his face. "I didn't want to either, but it's worth it."

"If you say so," I mumble. "Anyway, it's up to Bailey whose car we go in, because she drove us to church."

Bailey immediately hands her keys to him. "By all means take my car. Either way, she can't leave 'til one of us is ready to take her." She smirks at me, knowing this will annoy me to no end.

Xane follows me and Bailey to out to her Jeep Wrangler. Then, He takes his place in the driver's seat and Bailey makes me sit in the passenger's seat.

"Nice car," he comments after driving in silence for a few minutes. "Seems perfect for Texas weather."

"It is," I agree smiling. "I love it."

"And that's why I got it," Bailey boasts. "Mal and I like driving through the Hill Country pretty often."

"Especially if the Hill Country takes us to Boerne," I chime in.

"Two girls like you love going to Boerne, why am I not surprised," he wonders with a smirk.

"Maybe because you don't know me half as well as you think you do," I tease.

"I know you well enough," he counters.

I roll my eyes and watch Bailey giggle in the back seat. We all fall into a comfortable silence on the twenty-minute drive to our destination.

When we arrive at The Dominion, it takes everything in me not to freak out with excitement. This is where some of the most famous and richest Texans alive live. George Strait used to live here! And so many of the Spurs players! Xane looks at me as if waiting for a fangirl reaction, but I won't give it to him.

"Wow," Bailey breathes. "This is awesome. Your top-secret group thingy is really held in this neighborhood?"

"Yes," Xane answers. "Yes, it is."

"That's awesome," she says.

"Yeah, well, we like to do things big," he says.

"Well, this is certainly big," I comment more to myself than either of them.

Xane smiles to himself as he pulls into the correct driveway.

A few minutes later, after he's parked the car in the garage and gotten out, he leads us to a metal room that appears to be like an elevator.

This is my favorite part about working here," Xane comments as the elevator room scans his voice, retinas, and body for accuracy. "It makes me feel like I'm James Bond or something."

Bailey and I exchange a look as I reply, "That's adorable."

Though he grimaces, I can see a grin in his eyes.

After approving him, a door to the elevator room opens and a group of people are waiting feet away from us. "Bailey, Mal, this is the team," Xane introduces. "We'll have formal introductions soon."
