Synced Breathing

"You know what just butters my egg roll?"

"I don't know Tyler, What does?" Ash retorts tiredly.

"I bet Troye does," Connor inserts with an attempted eyebrow wiggle.

"Shut the hell up," Tyler throws a chicken nugget, misses, and ends up hitting Gigi, whose attention was on her cell phone.

"Whoever threw that nugget, ya mom's a ho." Clawing her nails in the nugget that had made its way into her shirt, Gigi threw it, missing, ironically, and hit Dan sitting next to me. Never have I seen such proud faces as those looking at Gigi, and such a horribly fake offended expression that was on Dan's. After the laughs made their way to a closing I spoke up with a giggle, "there's an abundance of food thrown at this table, so what does butter your egg roll Tyler?"

Collecting his thoughts again, trying to look meaningful, says "The fact that-"

"Oh my god Ash did you hear?" cutting Tyler off, Melanie runs up to Ash in a distressed state.

"whoa, whoa, Mel what happened?" Ash clasps her hands and looks her in the eyes to try to calm her.

"Gus died."

The entire table went silent. No one moved, Ash started asking questions. I could not hear her. All I could see was Dan. The nothingness in his eyes. Suddenly, after a while, his breath hitched and he walked calmly out of the cafeteria, seemingly not breathing. I had to follow him.

Dan went to the back exit, into the sharp air stabbing our lungs.

"Dan."

He stopped, about to step off of the side walk to the parking lot. I don't think that he knew I followed him. He turned to me, not making eye contact, tears threatening to leak.

"Phil."

I tried to think of the right thing to say, the one thing that I wished people would say more often, not anything stupid like 'are you okay', but something that would matter.

"Do you need anything Dan?"

He looked me in the eyes slowly. I could feel his emotion bearing into my soul. A tear ran down his face slowly. He just looked at me. I stepped towards him slowly, extending my arm to rest on his shoulder, "Da-"

I lightly gasped as he came towards me quickly, taking my torso in his arms and shoving his head to my chest, embracing my fully. The little gasps escaped his lips as he fought tears. My arms came down upon his back and shoulders, he seemed so small right then, so fragile, so abnormally cold. I glided my hands across his back, my head resting on his. The tears came so violently, I just hugged him at tightly as I could, it felt so right. I embraced him through all of the tears, all of the violent sobs, helped him even his breathing when he was about to start hyperventilating. There we stood, I protected him from the cold, he protected me from the nightmares.
