I believe many fresh writers start writing romance fanfiction the hopes of quenching their thirst for a character. There is a mistake that gets made here, a big misconception. Your character is not you. No matter how much you refuse to believe it, your character is not you. I'm guilty of writing x readers and stuff for hormonal reasons but....It's hard to believe, yes, but the character is not an extension of yourself. You are an extension of your character. You need to know every inch of their body. You need to understand the very depths of their consciousness because this creation of yours simply cannot be you. They can be inspired by you of course but do you really think that if you were thrown into a situation full of flames, death, and dirt you'd handle it as you wrote your character to handle it. No right? Most people would freak out. Aside from all that the main reason why having your character be just like you isn't the best strategy is because you don't know yourself. I don't care what you say about being in tune with your inner self. Why? Because most people are not in tune. You have layers and layers of outer emotions on you. It's like wearing several masks. You need to understand your deepest and strongest emotions to truly be able to write a character like you. This is why your character should not be you. It'll end up very shallow.

Creating a character is like sleeping with them. Not in the context that one might interpret that as but more like roommates who have just spent their first night together. There's a level of intimacy achieved from that. I wouldn't know but hey I'm trying. It's increasingly difficult to write as another person but pulling off your own masks to the point at which you can throw on another and be able to bring your character to life is a very strong way of writing

Mind you, I can't ever accomplish it
