After Tyler finally convinced the older boy he wasn't dying, they headed to Josh's house.
"Y-you're sure you're ok?"
"Yes, Josh. I'm ok."
They were greeted at the door by his mother.
"You boys look tired. Would you like to join us for dinner Tyler? I'm making spaghetti!"
He considered the thought, picking at his sleeve. Then he nodded.
"That would be great ma'am."
-
Five minutes into the meal and Tyler regretted his decision already. Josh's mom had asked him every question a person could imagine. He felt like he was at school again, taking a quiz.
"How's school?"
"Good."
"What's your favorite subject?"
"Probably Art."
"How'd you meet my son?"
"...We have Art class together."
"Are you gay?"
Josh piped in. "Mom!"
"Sorry, sorry, probing."
Tyler chuckled awkwardly and poked at his half-eaten dinner.
"Not hungry?"
"Small appetite."
"Ah. What's that on your sweater, hun?"
He looked down and realized how noticeable the red stain on his sleeve was. Tyler cleared his throat and came up with a lie.
"Uh, I must have gotten sauce on it. So much for the napkins, I guess."
The older woman smiled sweetly. "Aw, well here, I'll put it in the washer for you. You can borrow one of Josh's shirts."
He looked at the older boy for approval. Josh smiled and ran upstairs to grab an extra shirt, so Tyler took his sweater off.
He waited on the couch until Josh came back down. He watched the older boy search the room for him until his eyes locked onto Tyler's figure. Tyler could hear the other boy's breath hitch and felt a blush rising.
After a few seconds, Josh broke out of his trance and tossed the way-too-big t-shirt at the other boy.
After he slipped it on, they heard Josh's mom.
"Tyler, hun, could you come here for a minute, I don't know what this sweater is made of or if it needs special care."
He shrugged and walked into the laundry room and looked at her.
She turned around, a look of concern laced in her eyes. The woman held the sweater up, speaking in a hushed voice.
"Hun, this is blood."
