Melia's POV
***
"He'll remember you Melia. Just give it time. We're still unsure of what caused the loss of consciousness and bleeding but we assume it has everything to do with his cancer, and so is this memory loss. It's brain cancer. Everything is connected to his brain; especially memory. He still loves you. This just isn't him right now."
I didn't answer, even though the doctor was trying to help. How long am I supposed to wait? How long do I even have left with him? How do I spend my last days with someone who doesn't even remember my name?
I sat with him for the rest of the afternoon. And the night. And next morning after that.
The nurses were all very sympathetic and didn't mind my company around the hospital. They told me he should be let out tomorrow as there is no physical signs of distress on his body, other than his tumours. But those will always be there.
I know he doesn't have long because they didn't start any kind of treatment. Not even chemo. They know he's going to die soon anyway, it would just be a waste of money. But they don't tell anyone that.
I held his hand every single day and told him how much I loved him, even if he didn't understand.
I dozed off in the chair the last night before his release. It didn't last long though.
I heard a strange beeping noise. Only one to start. I'd never heard this one in his room before.
Shortly after all the monitors in the room started flashing, followed by many more beeps from all different machines.
"Doctor! I need a doctor, something's wrong!"
Nurses and doctors came running into the room. They looked at the screen and took a deep breath.
They injected him with drugs and even tried breathing new air into his lungs. Nothing worked. The machines didn't stop beeping.
My world turned back to black and white. I knew he was gone. My everything. He was gone and he took every inch of life and colour with him.
Five minutes after I already realized he was gone the tall nurse told me, "He flatlined. I'm so sorry... we did everything we could. He's in a better place now."
