I had to.
I had to do this.
To show I was part of the community.
"Sandra!" They called me in.
All members of the community had to be burned.
Burned so badly the scar on their hand would never heal.
"Hold out your hand."
A man told me.
I did just that.
He looked at me strangely.
"No, hun, the hand you write with." He said in a perplexed voice.
"I know, I am." I said idioticly, not thinking about the outcome. When I realized what I admitted, it was too late.
"OH! Um, I mean...Right." I looked down and held out my right hand, hoping he wouldn't notice.
His green eyes became curious.
"I won't tell anyone." He promised, then took out the burner.
He barely touched my skin, and I flinched deeply.
"Is it on too high?" He asked, worried.
"Maybe..." I whispered, but I knew good and well it was barely on at all.
He checked, even though he knew exactly what I knew.
"You're weak." He told me.
"I know...." I whispered, then began to cry.
'Oh, hun, here, have a tissue." He told me, and handed the pointless object over.
I wiped my eyes with it, then looked wide-eyed at him.
He jumped back in confusion and almost...terror.
"HOW DID YOU..?"
He asked this with true fear. "I sense your power....it's blinding me!"
My eyes widened. "Stop.....STOP!!!!" He yelled.
"Stop what??!" I screamed, and he dropped the burner. "You're not weak. You're not weak at all..." He trailed off, and then looked me deep in my eyes which apparently scared him.
He held up a mirror. They were the color of dirt. I looked forward, and set the mirror down without my hands. My eyes told it to, so it did.
I then looked at him sadly. "You're not weak." He said again, and then looked at me sadly. "So why do you pretend to be? You've convinced yourself you are this way for so long."
"I'm not convincing...it's my hand." I told him, stammering. "Use your other hand now." He firmly commanded.
"I...."
"Now."
I sighed, and looked at my right hand with my eyes. Brown eyes are more powerful than left hands are weak, so I was now able to write with it. I was even more powerful than Azalya. I just never let it show. Until now.
I was able to hold the color for longer now. It felt truly amazing to be this powerful. To have complete control just ONCE in my life.
Too good.
Power changes people. It's simply just a fact. I can't let it change me.
So I let it go.
My eyes slowly returned to blue.
"How's that for a permanant mark?" I asked.
And left.
