That night I woke up to the empty bed and saw it was a bit over 1am. I got up and heard some noise downstairs. So I knew Colin couldn't sleep again and he was wondering around the house. I went downstairs to see what was the matter..
-Babe, why are you awake?
-I needed to think. Didn't mean to wake you.
-Think about what?
-You..well, us, somehow.. I'm not making much sense, am I?..
-No, but it's funny watching you struggling, I smiled amused. Come! Let's sit down and try to explain what is bothering you.We sat on the couch and I put my arm around his shoulders. He smiled faintly and took a deep breath before starting to speak..
-I've been thinking.. You truly don't want children of your own?
-We discussed about this. We have Cathy, babe. I couldn't ever wish for a better child.
-I know. I meant.. Maybe you will think it selfish.. But I thought that maybe we should have a child of our own.
-I don't know what to say..
-Say nothing. Just let me finish, he said taking my hands in his. I want to give you the joy of having a child..you know, the miracle of giving birth. I know you'd say you are fine even without that. And that we're a happy family just as we are now. And you are right. But also I would like to give you something..Someone to remind you of me, and perhaps yes, this is a bit selfish.
-I wouldn't need to remember you. You'll always be in my heart. And please let's not think so far in the future again.
-But one day it'll happen, darling. And it pains me to think about it. Merely because I don't want to let you and our girl alone. I thought.. that perhaps it would be a good idea. To have this experience, to be through it together.. And Cathy said she'd like to have a sister.
-She has 3 brothers..
-Exactly. Having a little sister will be amazing for her.
-How can you even be sure we'd have a daughter?
-I just feel it, honey. Give my idea a chance. Think about it, it would be a bounding experience..
-We're bounded enough already.
-Why are you avoiding telling me what you think of my idea?
-Because I don't think it necessary. And think of the implications.. What will your sons think?
-They accepted Cathy..
-We adopted her, babe. Having a child of our own is a whole other matter..
-They'll get used to the idea in time. As they did with our relationship. Please, don't think of anybody right now. Just think of how you feel about it. Tell me what you think..
-My heart says yes, my mind says we're completely delusional.
-We listened to our hearts so far and look at us now. We're a happy family, darling, but that doesn't mean we can't be even happier.
-Then I guess I have nothing else to say against it..
-So that's a yes?
-Yes, babe.He smiled brightly and gave me a long, tight hug. I started weeping silently at the happy thought of having a baby girl. Colin gently whipped off my tears and gave me a light kiss..
-Don't cry, darling. You'll make me cry too, he laughed. Better tell me, what do you think of Emily?
-Who's Emily?
-Who will she be. I meant..as a name for our baby girl.
-You can't seriously be so sure it'd be a girl!
-When you want something really much it usually happens. And I really want a daughter.. I mean, one of my own.
-Then I think Emily is a good name. I like it.
-And we could call her Em.
-Before making thousands of plans and starting arranging a room for the baby, don't you think we should.. Start by starting?
-Why, of course..He got closer and started to kiss me passionately, hurriedly..
-Not here, babe. Let's not wake Cathy up. Shall we go back to our room?
-After you, honey.
-Always a gentleman, I laughed.Back in our bedroom he gave me a look full of passion and lust. I put my arms around his neck and kissed him hard. He pinned me agains the wall and started to kiss my neck as I was gently unbuttoning his pj's blouse. He returned me the favour as I was running my hands over his chest and through his hair, getting more and more excited. He started kissing my shoulders and I started moaning slowly.
Then we were kissing passionately, falling on the bed..and then he did his thing best..
***
In the morning I woke up in his arms, resting my head on his chest. I moved slowly not to wake him up but saw he was already awake and staring at me, smiling..-Good morning, darling!
-Good morning, babe!
-Why are you staring at me like that?
-Why are you so beautiful?
-Don't answer my question with another question, I teased.
-Well, because you made me the happiest man alive, honey. Because I like looking at you, my lovely wife. Just as I like looking at our princess and as I would like looking at our baby girl. And because I love you.
-Aww..I love you too, babe.He gave me a kiss on the forehead and I smiled brightly. We stayed a little longer in each other's arms and then got up to check up on Cathy..
-She's still sleeping. It's Saturday after all..let her sleep a bit longer.
-Why would I wake up a little angel? Look how peacefully she sleeps.
-She's a little angel indeed.
-Let's go downstairs and have breakfast, shall we?
-You real my mind.
-Always.We sat at the breakfast table and I noticed Colin thinking about something as he had an absent look in his eyes..
-Anything the matter?
-What? Oh..nothing.
-You're clearly thinking about something..
-Yeah..well I was just thinking about last night.
-Which part?
-All of it, actually.
-I was just teasing. I'm thinking about it too..I think we made a great decision.
-You didn't seem so sure then.
-I couldn't help worrying a bit. But I truly believe it would make us even happier. I just don't know.. I maybe have a little distrust in my mother instincts.
-Seriously? You've been a mother for about 2 years and you're doing great.
-But Cathy was already 3. Now we're talking about a baby.
-You'll be a great mother. And what am I here for if not to help you, darling?
-You always say the right things..
-You always worry for nothing.
-And you don't?
-I do..sometimes. But not always for nothing. You know I can't stand the thought of leaving my girls alone..all 3 of them.
-You have only 2 so far.
-Not for long..I smiled and he took my hand in his. We finished breakfast quietly and then went to check up on Cathy again. She was just waking up and got up quickly running toward us. Colin took her in his arms and kissed her on the forehead..
-What shall we do today?
-Go out to the park?
-Okay, darling, but not before you have breakfast.***
We went out to the park, Cathy holding our hands. She was looking fascinated at a white butterfly and asked if she could follow it so off she ran on the hill in the park as we were watching her closely..-You think we should tell her already?
-I don't know. Tell her what, exactly?
-Oh, you know..just ask her if she'd like to have a sibling.
-Yeah, that'd do. But pray, don't ask her if she'd like having a sister. You can't seriously be that sure well have a daughter.
-I'm pretty sure. But I won't, promise.
-How can you?
-I guess is just my intuition.. I really don't know, he laughed.
-I see I'm not the only one having supernatural powers, I laughed too.
-No. You read minds and I have sharp instincts.
-We'll see..Hope your intuition is correct.
-Me too..
-Cathy! Come here, darling!
-Yes, mommy?!
-Daddy and I wanted to ask you something..
-Would you like to have a sibling..a little sister or brother?
-I want a sister.. But I guess a brother will be nice too..
-Maybe you'll have a little sister.
-Or brother, I said glancing at Colin seemingly annoyed.
-Or a brother, I was going to say that.
-But I have brothers already.
-True that..see, Cathy thinks the same way I do.
-2 to 1.. I should give in. A little sister it is..I hope.
-We hope too.
-I thought you know..
-Tease as much as you please..
-Can I go back to play?
-Sure, little darling.
***
-Want to go on a little trip?
-You think we need a trip for..
-For ourselves..put it like that.
-Okay..where to?
-Our hill?
-And you say it is merely for us..no other purpose, yeah..
-Oh, come on!
-Well remember our wedding night..
-Now who's the one thinking of something else than simply spending time together?
-You started!
-You're so lovely when you get mad. Come here!He put his arms around my waist and gave me a slow, long kiss..
-I should let mom know we need a bit of babysitting this weekend.
-Alright, call her. But don't mention anything about our idea yet, would you?
-Cathy might do before us.
-It's a risk I'm willing to take. Just let's not give her the reason for the trip..
-Good point..
