Blink..

A white surface.

Blink..

An air conditioner.

Blink..

Where am I? She thought.

Bright, sharp light rushed into her eyes, cutting them with a piercing force. She batted her eyelids with pain and irritation. I'm cold! She acknowledged, feeling a shiver prickling under the hairs on her skin. She clutched the sheet protectively.

Where am I?

She felt nakedly exposed so she tried to shift her gaze down on her body which was now lying horizontally on a soft bed. Um, when did I exactly get a soft bed?  Flashes of a worn-out mattress burned her 'temporal lobe' in an instant with unwanted scenes. And, why do I feel so naked? She peeked inside the thin blanket over her and found she was literally nude under it.

"Ahhhhhhhhh!" she cried with alarm, "Where are my clothes? Why am I... am I, um, not wearing anything?" With the abrupt pressure to her vocal cord, dry coughs geared up from the back of her throat. Choking for air, she looked around for water while searching for any nearby soul who could save her from dying. "Hey, wake...," She coughed, "u..up," she said with difficulty to an elderly woman sitting at the corner of the devilishly white room.

The woman jerked her head, probably ripping few veins, startled as she was dozing peacefully on a stool. "Wait" She hurriedly said and handed her a glass full of life. She drank it with utter satisfaction. Well, now, you can die peacefully! She thought with lame sarcasm.

"Wait until I go and fetch you something to eat. I need to tell Dr. Patel that you're awake." The woman, whom she presumed to be a nurse, spoke as she prepared to leave.

"One minute" She suddenly blurted out, shocking the nurse. The sentence didn't sound like a request, rather more like an order. She cleared her throat before asking, "Where am I?" The desperation in her rude voice was evident and the older woman noticed it too.

"I can't say anything, dear. I'm your nurse. I have to let your doctor know, and he will inform you everything if he wants to." She replied quickly in a Spanish accent, pressurizing the "t's" and ran out of the room. "Okay!" She muttered, feeling a little numb suddenly. Then she got herself busy exploring the items of furniture and stuff in the room.  There was nothing attractive except for the beeping machine attached to her beating pulse. This sound was unnerving.

A random thought was jumping up and down inside her brain in order to let itself be noticed. Wait, what did she mean by 'if he wants to'? Is it possible that he will not let me know anything if he doesn't want to? She pondered thickly while the door opens revealing her nurse. She had brought some clothes and food for her.

Without knowing, she moaned out a "mmm.." upon seeing the mouth-melting food on the tray. But, if it was not for the nurse, she would have forgotten about her exposed body under the blanket. And yes, she was trembling with painfully chilly air. How grateful I am! Gosh, help this poor child! She prayed before starting to eat as soon as she completed dressing up.

" Um, is there any chance of my doctor not telling me all the information I have the right to know?" She asked with a mouthful of boiled chicken. Why am I getting chicken? This is royal food and I'm nobody near to being royal! All these years went with grumbling sound of her stomach and an empty, cold room. She was fine until now, life was livable. Then what did she do to end up here, in a luxurious hospital? Hammering her brains with the urge to remember slipped in vain as a dull ache took its place in her head.

"I don't know. He will tell you everything if he likes you to know, dear!" Her endearing voice penetrated through her like a needle.

 She didn't understand.

"I don't understand why are you saying again and again that he will tell me everything according to his choice?" She asked, furrowing at the decreasing taste of the once heavenly food. I guess, all these tensions are gradually building inside my chest, causing my taste buds to become numb. A truck of questions was moving forward and backward in her brain. First of all, where was she? Then, what was this place? Who was Dr. Patel? And why could he do anything he wanted to do? Mostly, what had happened to her? Why was she naked? Had there been an operation going on her body? If so, then why didn't she see any scar or feel any pain?

She slid the tray towards her nurse indicating that her hunger had been devoured. Then she lay down to wait for Dr. Patel. Moments felt like an eternity here. The silence was dry and barren; it could not let a single thought grow inside one's head. The girl tried harder once more to recall some past incidents and she failed once more. Life is really a puzzle, without one piece, one cannot link the others to anticipate the meaning of the whole picture.

She grazed her fingers over the silk bedsheet consistently in an effort to suppress the fear and insecurity, evolving like a monster in her heart. She did not wish to go home because she did not have one. She did not want to call her friends either as they would have ignored her absence since the day she went missing, she guessed. But part of her wanted them to reach out to her, to save her and take her to her school. Everything in her life was so simple and lonely that people could be envious of her fortune. Wow, again a lame joke?! She laughed at herself.

"Hello Ms. Howlett, welcome back." A rough voice of a man echoed through the room, causing her to shoot up on the bed gripping the blanket cautiously. As soon as her eyes landed on the nurse she remembered she had clothes on now. "No need to worry, dear" She mouthed the words, probably sensing the former's stupid loss of memory.

"Hi, Dr. Patel?" The girl greeted him.

"Absolutely! Nice to see you awake and shine. Now, tell me how are you feeling right now? Are you nauseous or dizzy?"

"Not at all. I think I'm fine!" She said scratching her hair. It was always her habit when she felt confused. Though her throat was getting dry time and again, she decided to avoid the silly matter.

"Very good then. Can you see clearly?"

"Yes."

"Are you feeling like moving or walking on your own?" His voice confident yet curious.

Ms. Howlett thought for a moment before answering, "Yes. In fact, I'm feeling numb lying here for so long." While speaking out the last sentence, she looked for any sign of hint in his expression. She did not know if she was here for a lengthy period of time or a short one. So, I have to play it cleverly in order to get some hints at least.

But, the sly doctor pretended to be innocent and kept his face as straight as a blank page. Anger and adrenaline started boiling in a cauldron of fear inside her mind. She needed to escape. Why she didn't know! This place, these people were not giving her a friendly vibration even though they were acting sweetly. Bitter-sweetly! She shivered at the thought alone.

"Doctor, why am I here?" She asked, failing to shut in her curiosity anymore. His eyebrows joined in a devious manner before he replied, "You are here because you were reincarnated."

Ms. Howlett's whole world seemed to spin like a gyroscope, shaking her ground with a strong sensation to vomit. She wanted to know more but her body was cooperating with her no more. Reincarnation? What was that?

"Dr. Patel? I want to know more. Ple...please, tell me what is this reincarnation? Am I dead? Was I.. I dead?" She stammered as dizziness took over her, blurring the image of the doctor in front of her. I want to know, please! She muttered.

"Ms.Howlett? Sarah? Oh my god! We need to call her back. Now!" She heard Dr. Patel said.

Then, it went blank.
