Gone, Lost and Alone

Chapter 5|Friendless

   A week passed.

I spent it doing the same thing everyday. In the day I would babysit. I loved playing with children but they were a handful sometimes, causing me a lot of stress.

In the night, Ian would come home angry and stressed, shouting at me, and my day would end in tears and nightmares.

I had been calling Sean and Rachel to try to make up but they didn't pick up.

So today I decided to go to see them, starting with Sean.

  I took Liam and Lacy with me. Fortunately, I had no kid to babysit.

As we get to Sean's, Lacy nudges me. "I want KitKat "

I sigh. "KitKat's at home"

"But I want it now!"

I groan.

Not now! Not again, I think.
Aunt Chloe, Sean's mum comes to my rescue.

"Hello my darlings!" she beamed. "Come say hi!"

They run over to hug her, the KitKat forgotten for now.

 I smile. Aunt Chloe is my favorite person in the world, apart from Sean.

She is way to beautiful for a woman in her mid-forties. Her blonde hair is pulled into a bun,and she's wearing her favorite blue sundress over a pale yellow apron. She always managed to look delicate and willowy yet strong.

" Sweetie, don't I get a hug?" she asks me. I wrap my arms around her and hug her way to hard.

"Ow!" We giggle.

"Sweetie, I was just making sundaes, wanna help?"
"Yes of course "

She turns to the twins "Wanna help too?" They cheer.

We walk into the brick one story, and head to the kitchen, which has bowls of nuts,fruit, cream and a bunch of other toppings on the kitchen island.

I automatically look around for Sean, but I don't see any sign of him. My heart drops.

I hear voices and then Rachel and Sean walk in. They were holding hands. I pursed my lips.

At least they aren't laughing like starstruck lovers.

I look away and notice Aunt Chloe looking at their hands like I was.

"Hi mum! "

"Hey, Aunt Chloe"

Sean smiled."We're just going to stay in the living room for a while." Then they both left, with only Rachel stopping to glance my way.

I looked at Aunt Chloe and she gave me an it's-gonna-be-okay smile.

I notice that my trouble makers are unusually quiet.
I spin and find them eating. Liam has his mouth filled with rainbow sprinkles and Lacy's face is bathed in chocolate. Their clothes don't look too good either.

"You two little devils!" I screech, but I'm not sure if I mean them or my "friends" in the living room.

  Ten minutes later, the twins were clean and the yummy sundaes were ready.

Aunt Chloe suggested we go to the backyard to eat them and soon, there we were, sitting on plastic chairs with a view of the maple tree, swing, and her pretty garden.

I dug into my sundae immediately, relying on it for comfort in this awkward situation.

Sean and Rachel continued talking about something I didn't care enough to listen to.

Sean took a spoonful of his sundae."It's great mum!"

She grinned "Oh B made it, not me."
He looked at me for the first time and gave me a small smile before continuing his discussion with Rachel.

I made his sundae with all of his favorites-strawberry, pistachio and vanilla icecream, chocolate milk, whipped cream,macadamia nuts, strawberries, and a lot of syrup. It was worth it.

Sean didn't speak to me but I knew our friendship wasn't totally destroyed.

I miss him so very much

I watched them talk. They talked about movies, sports, songs and a million other things.

They laughed so hard I was almost convinced they had finally gotten crazy. They seemed totally oblivious to the world.

Or at least Rachel did. But Sean sat in a slightly stiff position and I knew he was very aware of me, even though he was ignoring me.

The loneliness I felt reduced.
But they still talked.

Aunt Chloe gave up on trying to get a word in and went inside to play with the twins. I stayed.

They talked.

"I think Moana was so awesome! And that chicken was so stupidly funny!" Rachel was saying. "I've watched it 7 times and I still can't get enough! And the songs are awesome!"

Then she started singing,"I've been staring at the edge of the water for as I can remember, never really knowing why... "

"...I wish I could be the perfect daughter, but I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try" Sean finished.

They laughed.

"I love that part!" they said at the same time. Then came the star-struck-lovers look they gave each other.

I felt sick. My heart hurt. I went inside.

"It's time to go!" I called.

I saw Aunt Chloe sitting in the living room. They were sleeping on her lap.

"Oh no!" I groan. "They are never going to wake up!"
"You could just sleep here, love" Aunt Chloe offered.

I shook my head and she nodded in understanding.

"We can go in my car, "
I turned to see Rachel giving me smile.

"Thanks". I carried the twins outside, while she opened her silver BMW.

I gently put them inside before entering. I shut the door.

Sean came out and hugged Rachel. He gave me a careless glance.

Rachel got in and started driving.

We got to my house quickly.
I got out and shut the door, carrying Liam and Lucy.

I looked at Rachel smiling sadly,   "You helped me only to make her like you, right?"

"Yup"

And she drove off, leaving me there, friendless.
