According to Crim, North American Burial investigated dozens of graver cases over the previous two years. There were incidents throughout Europe, across the Americas, here and there within the Pacific rim, and parts of Australia. Even Hawaii was reporting corpses walking away from funeral homes and crematoria. Under Oliver Jessop's leadership, the funeral industry took the lead investigating the phenomenon on behalf of their franchised funeral homes. But when it became apparent, the resurrections were happening on a global scale, Jessop came to understand the scourge needed more resources and a global network of allies. Crim and Domagio confided to us, they were just the tip of a graver hunter iceberg.
Beyond prophecies of a biblical end of days, there were few explanations about why dead people were coming back to life. The Englishman explained he'd come up with his own theory. According to his research, the gravers he documented were without exception individuals with career exposure to the dead. The candidate list included doctors, morticians, morgue workers, coroners, soldiers who've seen battle, police – specifically homicide detectives, and a few other professions. Fascinating! But just when Crim was getting into more detail about how gravers might be born, Healy yawned - loudly. Then the nut stopped a passing busboy, holding up his empty beer glass.
"Brew me," he ordered. "And where's that waitress with my ice-cream?" he complained.
I loved the guy but his obnoxious behavior was too much. Crim and I glared at my boyfriend.
