Since it was shot at night, the video quality was poor. Half a minute of jerky picture played before we got our bearings and understood what we were seeing. Domagio pointed out, father had an iPhone in his shirt pocket, recording what was in front of him. His point of view was a bright sign glowing in front of him. We determined he was in a parking lot behind a 24-hour pharmacy, crouched behind the old Packard. The phone captured some sound, and ambient noise could be heard in the background. Domagio picked up on the hum of industrial fans at the back of the stores, and the siren of a passing fire truck. Crim told his partner to increase the volume. Every clue they could get from the video could help pinpoint father's location, maybe even the time of the encounter.
The camera jostled as father scurried like a cockroach from the Packard to a spot behind a light standard. In front of him, about thirty yards away, a woman exited the drug store carrying a shopping bag and purse. It was clear father was stalking her. She headed towards the camera to her car, not knowing what was lurking in the shadows. When she got closer, we could see a silk scarf wrapped around her face. Only her eyes were visible, but she carried herself like a middle-aged woman. There was only one car in view, an SUV parked under a lamp post. She arrived at the driver-side door but stopped. She looked over towards the camera, probably seeing my father's figure lying in wait.
"Get out of there," I whispered urgently.
The camera view jiggled as father dashed toward her. The woman suddenly dropped her shopping bag and started fumbling in her purse. She got hold of her key fob but dropped it. As she crouched to locate the fob, her eyes darted in horror to the approaching thing. A squeal of panic could be heard. It made me shudder. The woman continued to grope over the pavement, and her fingers finally landed on her keys. Then the camera panned down which meant father must've been bending down right over top of her. Suddenly, a Reebok shoe - the type my father wore - stepped onto the woman's hand, pinning it to the ground. She grunted, more from exasperation than pain, I thought.
