Tobias POV:
I drove Tris home later that day and now we're sitting at the kitchen table eating dinner. We eat in silence. Unable to have this awkward silence between us anymore I speak up.
"Tris I'm sorry."
She doesn't look up at me but she stops eating. "It's okay," she says in a weak voice.
I put down my fork and push my plate away. Tris looks up.
"Are you doing to tell me what happened or are you just going to pretend I don't exist?" I say sternly.
Tris picks up her plate and leaves the table and heads toward the sink. I get up as well and follow her. "Tris!" I say grabbing her and pulling her towards me. "Talk to me!"
"Don't touch me." She says quietly and doesn't look me in the eyes. She turns away and turns on the sink water.
Frustrated, I take her in my arms.
I expect her to push away, slap me, punch me, yell at me, or something. But she doesn't and I wish she would have.
She just stands there when I embrace her. It feels like I'm just hugging a lifeless doll. I squeeze my eyes shut. I lost her.
I slowly let her go and she stands there staring at me. I understand. I nod and walk out the door and down the hallway.
I walk aimlessly and think. Does she not love me anymore? Why does she hate me now? How can I help her through her pain? I need answers.
I turn the corner and freeze. Cole. He's staring at me with an evil smile.
"What do you want?" I spit out at him.
"Oh, nothing really," he says with a cruel smile. "Just you dead."
He lunges at me arms out and ready to attack.
I back up until I hit the wall behind me. Do I fight back and hurt Tris more? Or do I not and have him hurt me? I must do what's best for Tris.
He grabs my throat with both hands. I press my hands into fists to keep from punching him.
I start to go dizzy and I can't handle it anymore so I swing my arm I around and punch him in the side. He releases his grip and stumbles backward. I gasp for a breath and try walking down the hallway away from Cole. But I stumble around like a duck trying to gain some balance. I lean against the wall to catch my breath.
Cole recovers and grabs my neck again and slams my head against the wall.
I cry out unable to clear black patches from my vision. He slams my head into the wall again. Then again. And then again. My head feels heavy and I can't see through the patches in my eyes. I can feel my eyebrow split and is bleeding. I aimlessly swing at him but I'm in too much pain to cause any damage.
He hits my head one last time, and everything goes black.
**********Time Lapse*************
I wake up on the floor and hold my head. I look around confused. Why am I in Erudite headquarters? I stumble around unable to remember why I'm here or how I got here. I turn the corner down the maze of hallways and see a short girl with blonde hair. I feel like I've seen her before. She must be from Dauntless. She runs up too me.
"Tobias!" She exclaims, "where have you been? You were gone for 6 hours!" She looks worried.
Who is this girl? How does she know my real name?
"Who are you?" I ask. "How do you know my real name?"
She looks hurt. "What do you mean? Tobias I'm sorry for ignoring you but please I need to talk to you..." She takes my hand.
I pull away from her hand. What does this girl think she's doing?
"Okay, lady." I put my hands up, "I do not know you! So can you please tell me why we are here? Did the Dauntless take a trip here I don't remember?"
She looks shocked.
"Tobias... There are no more factions... Don't you remember?" She says. Her eyes look up at my forehead and her eyes widen.
"What happened to your head!?" She exclaims. She reaches her hand up to touch my forehead but I back away. My head starts throbbing.
She puts her hand down.
"Tobias..? We need to get you too the hospital. NOW."
