That day, and the next few weeks was filled with training. I worked under Mat, the Amity Ambassador, for a while before Four trusted me enough to start working on my own.
"Alright. Erudite wants our forces for some test of a serum," Four said. "Alex, let's hear about it."
"So, Erudite, well, more specifically Jeanine, wants to borrow 300 of our members to test out new serum. It's a mind control serum. She claims that she just wants to see if it works. I've been in close contact with Eric, one of her underlings, and I don't trust it. There's been rumors of an attack plan on Abnegation," I said. I pulled the articles about the attack plans out of my folder and handed a set to each of the leaders.
"Why are we even discussing this?" Tris asked.
"If they're planning an attack we should be stopping them not aiding them," Uriah said.
"I know, but I personally promised Jeanine that we'd discuss it," Four said.
"Well, I think it's bullshit," Tori said.
"Agreed," I said. "Shouldn't we warn Abnegation and offer some help or something?"
"Yeah, we will," Four said. He started formulating a plan. From now on, I was not allowed in Erudite alone, so I had to start taking Uriah. The Abnegation Ambassador, Axle, would also start taking an extra person, most likely Tris or Four.
"Alex, you are going to go back to Erudite this afternoon and decline their offer. When they start to give you Hell, walk out. They aren't trained in hand to hand combat so you can knock anyone there on their ass. Uriah, don't let him get hurt, and most definitely do not let him hurt anyone unnecessarily," Four said.
"Got it," I said. Uriah nodded in agreement. Four dismissed us, and Uriah and I headed above ground to catch a train to Erudite.
"Are you ready for this?" Uriah asked.
"Yeah, of course. I wanted to turn it down when they originally asked, but I can't without consulting you guys first," I said. I couldn't stand still as nervous energy coursed through my veins. I placed my hand on my hip holster and breathed out a sigh of relief that it was still their.
We were quiet until we reached the Erudite headquarters and jumped off the trains. Uriah reached for my hand as we headed inside. I knew it was habit.
"Uriah, we're at work," I said, moving my hand away from his quickly.
"Dang, you're right," he said. I headed inside and flashed my badge to the secretary.
"Who's the guy?" She asked.
"Bodyguard," I said without stopping. We headed right upstairs to the office.
"Hello, Alex, Uriah," Jeanine greeted us.
"Hello, Jeanine," I said.
"I hope you bring good news," she said.
"Well, I bring news. The Dauntless leaders have declined to help you. If you wish to test out a mind control serum, test it out on your own," I said.
"Alex, you can't do this," Jeanine said.
"We decided this as a leadership," I said. She reached for her waistband like she had a gun there. I moved my right hand up to my holster and stood as if I wasn't reaching for the gun.
"I always knew that Four wouldn't be a good leader," she said. "Neither are either of you."
"We'll be leaving. I'll be back in a week or so for another meeting," I said.
"I'll see you when scheduled," she said.
I stepped closer to Uriah and whispered, "Watch her hands. She reached for something on her belt."
The two of us backed out of the room and walked out of the building briskly before taking off on a dead sprint for the tracks.
When we returned to the Dauntless headquarters, Four was calling a meeting of a hundred of Dauntless's best fighters.
"What's going on?" I asked Tori.
"Protection detail for Abnegation," she explained. "Four said he wants to put himself and you up with Marcus."
"Why?" I asked. "He wouldn't let me be the ambassador there because of him."
"Alex, I'm doing it so we can protect the good people of Abnegation, and because we can be there and he can't hurt us anymore," Four said, walking up to us.
"Why do both of us need to be with him?" I asked.
"He's a leader," Four said.
"So are we," I said. "We're leaders."
"I know, but I'm putting Tris and Uriah at the Prior's house," he said.
"Leaders with leaders," Tori said, trying to reassure me.
"Fine," I said, glaring at Four.
Uriah and I only hung around for another fifteen or so minutes before we decided we needed to spend our last night together by ourselves.
