He said his goodbyes
In a tongue I didn't understand.
His meaningful message that made others cry
Was just meaningless gibberish to me.
He spoke in the native tongue of our people
That I, nor the other children understood.
He didn't want them to hear the sad goodbyes
Of a man sick with an undiagnosable illness
The sad goodbyes of a man
Taking an unknown path
That he knew led right to death's door.
He didn't want to bear that heaviness
Onto the innocent,
Cheerful,
Light-hearted,
Go-lucky
Children.
So that's why,
When the whole family gathered around
For thanksgiving dinner,
He said his goodbyes
in a foreign tongue.
That I,
Nor the other children
Understood.
I am regretful and sad that I
Could not understand his words,
Yet,
I am glad my ears were filtered from his words
Because
Just his tone
Was enough to make me shed a tear.
