“I’m telling you that it won’t work Lucius, just give up.”

“Nonsense, Severus, use your head a little before you get all haughty; have you seen the way she looked at you? Don’t be such a Gryfindor.”

Severus grimaced: “You should have seen the way she looked at Karkaroff when he was drowning in his own blood, she was absolutely adorable.”

Lucius shuddered at the thought: “Don’t tell me things like that before my bedtime; Narcissa refuses to read fairy tales to me anymore.”

Both men laughed for a while and Lucius poured Severus another glass of firewhiskey.

“Don’t get me thrashed Lucius; I have to work for a living. That means I can’t have a hangover,” said Severus with a smirk. Lucius sighted theatrically and sat down beside his friend:

“Why did you let her leave Severus? If there ever was a moment when a man should grab a woman into his arms and never let her go I must say you just missed it. Where was she headed anyway?”

“She probably went off to see Yaxley,” said Severus and finally accepted the alcohol. There was something bitter in the air tonight and he could always deal with the hangover in the morning. Of course, he would have to listen to some silly comments from Poppy but it could be dealt with.

“Someone else is after her and you’re just sitting here? I don’t believe this; Severus are you that stupid or stubborn?! Just go after her. If you would show interest, Yaxley would never stand a chance.”

Severus slammed the glass into the table: “Enough Lucius, nothing is going to happen between me and Lorrelaine, it’s hopeless.”

He was getting slowly fed up with this excuse for paying attention to Lorrelaine; Lucius took it too seriously. Maybe this was the right time to break him the news. Hesitantly, Severus pulled out his wand and pointed it at the door:

Muffliato.” Lucius started to laugh:

“Well, start talking friend; if whatever happened in Bangkok is something you don’t want Narcissa to overhear then it must be really good.”  He stopped laughing after a while though: “What’s going on Severus?”

“I don’t serve the Dark Lord anymore Lucius,” whispered Severus and grabbed onto his wand a little tighter just in case Lucius would want to call in Voldemort to report a traitor. But Lucius just sat back calmly:

“I wondered if you had your heart set on serving him,” admitted Lucius. “I know I don’t.”

Severus stared at his friend blankly, slowly accepting the implications of what he just said. Lucius laughed:

“What? I married Narcissa toward the end of the war and Draco was born soon after that…”

“You mean, those six months after the wedding, right Lucius?” smirked Severus and Lucius nodded:

“Yes, the special Malfoy pregnancy rate,” he winked at laughing Severus. “I didn’t really want to risk my life every day for a world that was only bound to be worse with the plans that the Dark Lord had; I might hate to hide my magic before Muggles and be intolerant to Mudbloods but I’m a husband and father. The only reason why I came back is because it was the safest thing to do for my family.”

Severus nodded and tried to avoid Lucius’ gaze but it didn’t really work:

“Well, Severus, it’s your time to spill. Where do your loyalties lie?”

“With Dumbledore,” answered Severus calmly and ignored the hiss of understanding that came from Lucius’ direction. “I really did switch sides after He attacked Potters.”
