Aliyah Sphinx and the Mysterious Locket

Chapter 1

Bang! Bang! Time to get up. I sat in my bed and clutched the locket my mother gave me. I was only one, I remember just faintly. Next to my locket was a key. I reached for the key and opened my locket. Inside was a picture of my mother. She had dark hair and brown eyes. She was carrying the trunk that looked like the one as the end of my bed. I shrugged.

Bang! Bang! I looked up from my thoughts, I saw everyone except me was out of the room. Headmistress is going to be mad! I hopped out of bed and threw on my clothes. I rushed out the door and to the kitchen.

"Sorry I'm late!! I, uh, lost my, uh, clothes!" I quickly lied.

"Aliyah!" The Fatty Woman, as I called Headmistress, screamed. "You're not gonna get away with this. You have an extra chore today. Do the dishes!! You missed breakfast." The Fatty Woman decided as she turned around and headed out of the room.

I could feel tears swelling up in my eyes. I swallowed them back, knowing crying would make my situation worse.  I spotted the tub full of dishes out of the corner of my eye. I walked over and placed the tub in the counter. Rose, one of my best friends walked over to me, Nancy, my other friend, not far behind.

"Hey Aliyah. Headmistress is just upset that you were late." I could tell Rose was being careful with what she said.

"Except she's always like that!!" I heard Nancy chirp. "Ow!" I overheard Nancy whisper. I assumed Rose had elbowed her, which made me smile. I hear fighting so I slam my soapy hands in the counter.

"Thank you for trying to cheer me up, but I'm fine, really." I spoke as I turned around. "Go start sewing." They nodded and started going to the sewing room. I closed my eyes, I could hear the heavy footsteps on the tile floor. I re-faced the sink and finished the dirty dishes.
