Everything was going well. Everyone was dancing, eating, socializing. It was perfect. I'm happy my sister was able to meet someone. And who knew it would be the head of our New Orleans division? This night couldn't have been anymore perfect.
"Hey," the birthday girl said from behind me with her hand on my back. "You wanna get a drink?"
"I should be the one asking you that," I reply with a little chuckle, "but sure."
I followed Robyn to the table where they had glasses of champagne lined up. After we both took glasses, we turned back around to look at the celebration before us.
"You know, I can't thank you and Kelly enough for doing all of this," she said, dreamily looking to the people on the dance floor.
"It was nothing honestly," I replied, "especially since Imani already had most of the celebration planned. Even the band."
Robyn looked Imani's way, smiling as she watched her talking animatedly with Chloe and Micah. Robyn chuckled to herself as she shook her head.
"I can't believe she did all of this for me," she said with a smile. "It still feels like we just got together. Can you believe it's already been over a year since we became official?"
"I know," I giggled back, "you two are made for each other. I'm happy for you guys."
Robyn looked at me, sympathy in her eyes as she continued to smile.
"You know," she began, "Kelly and I don't have to be the only ones to have a thriving love life. There are so many people that came out tonight. I mean come on Bey, even Chloe's got you beat...and she's your assistant."
We both laughed as we looked at her and Micah laughing at whatever Imani was telling them, their hands joined together on Micah's lap.
"I know," I replied with a small sigh. "I guess I'm just a little afraid to put myself out there. You realize I haven't dated anyone since my parents passed away, which was when I was eighteen. I'm thirty now, and I haven't even so much as looked at anyone that way. And as far as who's all here, there's no one that really catches my eye."
After looking around at all the people, I looked back to Robyn, only to see her gaze on someone else. I furrowed my eyebrows as I continued to look at her.
"Robyn, who are you-"
"Maybe you're looking at the situation wrong," she began, a mischievous gleam in her eyes as she smirked. "Maybe you're the one who needs to catch someone's eye. And I think I found who that someone is..."
She then nodded her head toward the person she was staring at. I turned in that direction, my body freezing at the man who had his eyes on mine intensely. I felt my face warm instantly. Looking at him caused my body to react in ways that I thought only happened when my abilities were bubbling up from anger. But it wasn't a scorching feeling I usually felt. It was soothing...almost like being in a sauna and letting the steam fill up every area of my body.
He was sitting in a seat at a table that was completely empty, a small smile appearing on his face. I tilted my head slightly as a smile of my own appeared on my face, the warm feeling in my body intensifying the more I looked at him.
