"Do we have everything in place for Robyn's surprise birthday ball tonight?"
"Almost," Kelly replied, looking at her holographic tablet. "We just need to pick up the cake you ordered last week from the bakery shop and everything will be ready."
I looked at the bustle of work being done below me as Kelly and I walked along the upper walkway of the building. A small smile made its way on my lips as I looked to her.
"I hope she enjoys everything," I said nervously. "One, it's hard to surprise her. And two, she's very particular about things. She's been with us for six years and I want to make her birthday special."
Kelly looked back to me, slightly chuckling. "It's gonna be great Bey. For one, I made sure to tell Imani to distract her all day so she doesn't suspect anything. Those two are inseparable. Second of all, you and I know Robyn like the back of our hands. Everything we ordered and put together she's going to love. Promise."
With that, she kissed me on the cheek, walking to her office. Her and I were the head of Theta Beasts, the largest and fastest growing company in America. Our close friend, Robyn, and her girlfriend Imani were head of our New Jersey division. They worked very well together, so it only made sense for them to end up with one another.
A lot of our best business ratings came from their division, so as a huge thank you, Kelly and I decided to throw Robyn a surprise birthday ball. We had live music, top of the line chefs who majored in cooking authentic island food since she was from Barbados, and the perfect venue for thousands of people to gather in her honor. She was a huge asset to this company, as well as the tiny family unit we became since we were only one state away from each other. We tried to invite as many of our other divisions to the celebration as we could, and luckily, a majority of them were able to come. It's been a long time since we were all in the same room together.
"Afternoon Ms. Knowles!"
Around the corner, happily walking towards me was my assistant Chloe. She was HQ's little ray of sunshine. I smiled at her as she made her way over to me.
"Afternoon Chloe," I replied. "And for the upteenth time, please stop calling me Ms. Knowles. It makes me feel like I'm my mama. Just call me Bey."
Chloe chuckled before continuing.
"I'll try to remember that. I'm not used to having a boss this down to earth."
We walked to my office, Chloe powering down her note pad before putting it in her purse.
"So what brings you my way so close to the end of your shift?" I asked, taking a seat in my office chair.
"Well," she began, "I just wanted to see how everything with the party's going. I heard you had a lot of big things planned for it."
"I do! I can't wait to surprise her."
"And I wanted to make sure you were...you know...okay."
I looked at Chloe with a little sadness. Getting older in age was making it more difficult to keep my supernatural symptoms and outbursts under control. Chloe was the only other person besides Kelly that knew about it.
"Right now I'm doing okay," I said, "but it's getting harder and harder to control with every business meeting I have to go to. At some point I just wanna throw caution to the wind and let everything out. I know I can't because I would put the company at risk of being shut down. It's all too much."
Chloe approached me and stopped at the front of my desk, her hand finding mine to hold.
"I can't imagine how hard this all must be for you. But please don't forget that you have a support system behind you. Me and Kelly. We'll always be here for you."
