Chapter Seven•~•Lilah•~•
I wake up the next morning by a sharp knock on the door.
"Lilah we need to leave in 30 minutes." Sam's voice comes through the walls. Sighing I stand up and get dressed. I hear his footsteps echo down the hall, slowly getting quieter. After putting on a turquoise tank top and some ripped skinny jeans, I pill my hair up into a high ponytail and put on some mascara. We may be going through the Dark Forest, but me without mascara is scarier than any beast in there. I throw on my black tennis shoes and walk into the kitchen.
Upon entering the kitchen I smell bacon cooking, and see a stack of pancakes on a plate on the counter. I pour myself a cup of coffee, then grab a plate a serve myself. Sam finishes cooking the last couple of pancake before sitting next to me.
"For the field trip we have a giant section of the forest fenced off using light electricity so none of the animals can get in. We will pack a bag and a tent and spend a night out there to get a feel for it. I will also be quizzing you on plants and animals as we go." Sam tells me. I nod in acknowledgement and continue eating. The rest of the meal is silent. After eating I go up to my room and pack an over night bag. Sam packs his bag and gets the tent and two sleeping bags. he tells me where to set my stuff and then goes to get food for the day. I carry half the stuff and he carries the other.
After exiting the back door, I'm hit with the smell of pine trees and an array of flowers. Sunlight hits my face and I smile at the warmth. Birds chirp and a slight breeze rustles the grass. For something so dreaded, it truly is beautiful. I turn to Sam. "I don't remember it being this pretty."
"Light has a way of doing that. when the sun goes down its different." He replies. "Don't get your hopes up. It's a trick." I find it unnerving how pessimistic he is. It angers me a little how he is so stubborn to only see things as Light and Dark, black and white. Grey is a color too.
"Sam your life would be so much easier if you learned to see the beauty in everything. See that flower?" I point to a red rose-like plant that has deep red tips on the petals and slowly gets lighter as it goes down, until its an almost white pink in the center. "That plant may be poisonous, but see the center? Everything has a little bit of light in it, because everything was created out of light. You just got to look for it." Sam doesn't reply, he just shakes his head and keeps walking. Hard headed asshole.
I don't talk to him the rest of the trip. I simply answer his entirely education based plant questions, and walk. Not a single ounce of conversation happens until dinner time.
"Lilah?" Sam says, momentarily taking his eyes off of his meal. I look up at him.
"Yeah?" I say hoping he is just asking how I like the food.
"Why were you avoiding me? Did I do something or...." He expectantly gazes at me and I know, just it's by his look, that I'm not working my way out of this one. So I make probably the stupidest decision of my life, and probably the most rewarding.
I tell him the truth.
"Look Sam I really like you" His eyes light up, overflowing with hope and filling me with it to. "And the kiss was amazing.." Now his happiness is slowly fading as he sees this is taking a turn for the worst.
"But..?" Filling in the blank, Sam looks back at his plate of food. I take a deep breath and continue.
"But a law is a law and we... we can't be together. It kills me to know so, but we can't be together." I finish looking up at him apologetically. He looks down at his lap again for a few seconds before his head snaps back up.
You know those cartoons where the character gets an idea and a light bulb appears over his head. That was the look on Sam's face. After his apparent, and unspoken epiphany, A wide smile appear on his face, stretching from ear to ear. Then he speaks.
"But I'm light."

During the walk I can't help but glance over at the beautiful girl walking beside me. She is never looking at me when I turn to look at her, but that allows me to gaze at her for a little while longer. She is on edge, waiting for something to attack her. It's really something to see her look so awake, so aware. Lilah had this affect on me, something I couldn't explain. She made me want to throw everything away to be with her, my job, my current life, any deals or bargains made...well any deals but that one.
While eating dinner I decided to see what's up with her.
"Lilah?" I say, glancing up at her.
"Yeah?" Lilah says. I hope she doesn't try to blow this off like every other time I asked her what's wrong
"Why are you avoiding me? Did I do something or...." I hold my gaze with her, trying to tell her through my eyes that she's not weaseling out of this this time. She pauses, putting me on edge.
And then, she actually replies.
"Look Sam I really like you" Her eyes glance up into mine as if making sure she can continue. My heart swells with hope.
"And the kiss was amazing.." She continues. The pause after this makes my joy disappear as I realiE where this is going.
"But..?" I urge her to continue. My eyes drift back to my plate and I suck my head down.
"But a law is a law and we... we can't be together. It kills me to know so, but we can't be together." She finishes, glancing at me with a desperate and apologetics look. I stare down at my now empty plate and then a thought hits me. We can be together! She just doesn't know it! We can be a couple!
I look back up at her and my face must show that I've just discovered something because she looks confused. A huge smile makes it's way on to my face as I'm filled with huge amounts of happiness.
"But I'm light." I say.
Lilah just stares at me. She doesn't reply for a long time.
"That's impossible." She says.
"Obviously it's not, because I'm light" I say, confused as to why she's being like this.
"Look I know in Dark customs, lying is okay. However, I'm pretty sure no matter where you stand, illegal is illegal." She says.
"Why don't you believe me? Weren't you the one just saying everything has a little bit of light in it? What, are you gonna change your mind suddenly just because its me. I thought light's weren't supposed to be judgmental."
"You just said that sentence as if you weren't light! You do have a little light in you sam, otherwise you wouldn't help people through here, but that doesn't mean your a Light citizen. You chose your place, now you can't turn back. And I'm not being judgmental, I'm stating facts." We are bothing standing at this point our food forgotten.
"God you're being such a bitch about this. Was your plan to just use your apparent law as an excuse, so you could play me? 'Cause right now you don't seem to care about how unbelievably rude you're being." I spit at her. "You might as well decide to be dark right now so you can run off to mommy and daddy and be a bitch to everyone else."
"I'm the one being unbelievably rude?! I should record this so you can hear how unreasonable your being you-"
"I'm being unreasonable?! You've got to be fucking kidding me Lilah. I was being honest. Not lying and you shut me down and accused me of ridiculous things just because you can't face the fact that your scared."
"Scared of what?"
" You're scared because you don't know what its like to be cared for cause your parents left." I yell. Her face goes pale.
"Fuck you!" She yells and then marches off.
