Ian and Ben were walking down the street and messing around. They had both been giggling and laughing, lost in their own little world, when Ben smirked and lightly shoved Ian further towards the building on their left.

"Tag, you're it!" Ben said the words between adorable giggles before running away from Ian.

It just so happened to be that he ran in the opposite direction of Ian and the building.

It just so happened to be that the street was that way.

It just so happened to be that the empty street suddenly had two cars racing down it.

It just so happened to be that the first car ran into Ben at well over the speed limit.

It just so happened to be that the second, also speeding, car swerved to avoid hitting Ben and hit the first car, instead.

It just so happened to be that Ian had watched it all in horror.

It just so happened to be that their perfect, giggly, little world had so suddenly been utterly destroyed.

It just so happened to be that Ian had been snapped back to reality by the smell of gasoline.

Ian observed the horrific scene as the stench of chemicals invaded his senses. The second car had crashed into the side of the other, effectively destroying both it's own front and the side it hit. A few feet away, Ben was laying on the ground. From how far away he was, Ian couldn't tell how bad he was hurt but, he definitely saw blood.

Concerned for his boyfriend and unable to get his legs to want to move, Ian focused harder on the boy in the street. The world froze around Ian as he realized something. Ben wasn't moving.

He forced his gaze away, not wanting to accept what he was seeing, only to be met with a larger horror. One of the cars was sparking and the pool of gasoline was growing larger. That's what it took for Ian's body to want to cooperate again.

He ran.

He didn't care that was running into danger.

He didn't care that he was risking his life.

He would save him.

He had to save him.

He wouldn't let Ben die - at least not like that.

Not if he could help it.

Ian stopped when he reached Ben's side. He crouched down and was almost afraid to pick him up. The smaller boy looked as if he would break with the slightest of touches.

There were scrapes and cuts all over his body, the right side worse, from skidding across the asphalt. The awkward angle of his left leg showed that it obviously broken. His shirt and part of his jeans were soaked through with blood. The look of extreme pain on his face broke Ian's heart but, he didn't have time to be sad. Not now.

With a heavy heart, Ian gently picked Ben up bridal style and stood back up. He took a step before freezing again. Ian forced himself to look back at the drivers of the cars.

They were both men around the same age as Ben and himself. They were both awkwardly and limply slumped against their steering wheels. Ian grimaced. He wanted to feel sorry for them but, the current state of his lover make that impossible.

Ian looked back to the safety of the sidewalk and walked towards it at a pace slow enough to not do further damage to the boy in his arms yet, fast enough to get them away from danger as quickly as possible.

Ian laid Ben down when he got back to where the little game of tag had begun. He kneeled down next to him and put two fingers to one of Ben's wrists.

He was slightly comforted by the feeling of a pulse under his fingertips. Ian let out a much needed sigh to set his mind straight. He had to get Ben help; there was no way he could much by himself.

So, Ian pulled out his phone and dialed 911. He waited for the call to go through before explaining the situation to the lady who had answered. He said a quick thank you to her and hung up after being told that an ambulance would be there soon. He put his phone away and fully turned his attention back to Ben.

Ian stared down at the poor, bleeding boy. His dying boyfriend. He took a deep breath and looked for the worst wounds. There seemed to be a lot of bleeding from a heavily scraped up section of Ben's right arm and from a cut near his right temple.

Ian stared at the wounds for a minute, too afraid to touch the boy again, before managing to get his shaky hands to press down on them.

He sat there, between Ben and the road, applying pressure in hopes of slowing the injured boy's bleeding for moments that felt like hours before it happened.

Before a spark finally hit the gasoline.

Before the loud boom sounded.
