Spicy foods have been getting a lot of hype recently over a supposed metabolism boost they provide. But do they measure up?

True, a dollop of wasabi can get the sweat glands going, but spicy foods only provide a small and temporary metabolism boost. It's not enough to make any significant changes.

So what's the point? When you eat zesty foods, you automatically drink more water. When you drink more water throughout a meal, you get full faster and consume fewer calories. 

Secondly, meals that are well-seasoned or pungent are more satiating than bland foods, meaning you'll be more satisfied with smaller meals.  So crack open the pantry and dust off your spice rack. Not only will your food be more satisfying, but most common seasonings are jam-packed with vitamins and vital nutrients.   

Helpful extra: You can also pull back on your salt intake by seasoning a little more liberally
