I Got You
Now I couldn't tell you much about the journey there as I don't remember anything. My thoughts were running away with me. All I do know is that the sat nav soon broke the silence, "You have reached your destination." Which immediately made me break my stare with Carter, to look out of the window. I could see mums drive was empty, there was no cars parked on there and all of the lights were out. It didn't look very promising. And just as I was about to burst in to tears, I noticed Jess had turned round and was looking over her shoulder at me,
"Shall we at least walk up the footpath and see if we can see anything through the windows?" She suggested.
I nodded as I stepped out of the car and carefully shut the door behind me, being careful not to wake Carter up. And before we made our way up the footpath, Jess took my hand in hers and squeezed it tightly, just to let me know she was there. But as we walked hand in hand I suddenly remembered that mum always left a spare key under the mat. I was so relieved it was there. I decided to let myself in and have a look round the house, see if there was any clues. Maybe she'd just left her mobile phone at home and she'd been called in to work or something. I don't know. Jess said she'd stand guard at the front door, just in case Carter woke up and needed us.
Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw next though. Not even could I have ever imagined something this low and I'm someone who always thinks the worst. As I walked round the entire house, every single room was empty. There was no furniture, the cupboards and walls were bare, even some of the light fixtures were gone. She's completely abandoned the house, Carter and me. I honestly don't know why I was so surprised. This is exactly what I'd expect from her but it still didn't make it any easier to take in. And as I made my way back to Jess at the front door, words failed me. I sat down on the front step with my head in my hands. Jess shuffled up and sat next to me and as she wrapped her arm around me, that's when the questions began,
"Are you alright babe?"
But I still couldn't come to terms with all of this. I burst out crying and Jess continued to try and find out what was happening,
"Babe, what's happened? She'll be back soon I'm sure"
"She's not coming back Jess. Take a look around, the house is empty. She's left us"
"WHAT!!!! You have to call the police" she suggested.
"NO!" I snapped. "I don't want them to get involved. They'll take Carter off me and put him in to a foster home. I don't want them involved please"
"What are we going to do then?"
And even though my world was falling apart, this girl made me feel better, effortlessly. Notice she said what are WE going to do, not what are YOU going to do. But before I could even attempt answering her question we were soon interrupted by a man standing up tall in front of us. Jess quickly removed her arm from being wrapped around me and jumped to her feet, to greet him at his level. Although she kind of towered over him a little. Jess was quite tall, even in her trainers. She quickly offered me a helping hand and got me up on my feet. And the guy continued,
"You must be Sienna?"
"Yes. Who are you?"
"I'm Alan. I was your mothers neighbour. She spoke very highly of you, it's a pleasure to meet you" as he held his hand out to shake mine.
"Thank you. Where is she?" I questioned.
"You mean she didn't tell you?"
"Didn't tell me what?"
