The screeching and chattering of the excited baby dragons made you chuckle, especially as the others couldn't ride them as easily as they had thought. You and Hiccup were riding on Astra, as she could hold up to two people comfortably on her back, but the others weren't too lucky in their mode of transportation. The shrill "I don't wanna die!" from Fishlegs had you giggling, with one hand clasped over your mouth to suppress the noise. You could hear Hiccup's chuckle from behind you. "We can't fly these things!" Tuffnut grunted, veering away from a ledge covered in snow. "Yeah, no kidding!" Fishlegs retorted, not as lucky and flying through a mass of snow. Eret seemed to be clinging onto his baby Nadder for dear life, which was also greatly amusing.
"Can't the Bewilderbeast take control of these guys too?" Astrid asked, seemingly having more luck than the others. "They're babies," Hiccup laughed, "they don't listen to anyone." Gobber seemed to be without any luck, as his baby dragon kept hitting the walls of the ravine, Gobber complaining the whole time. "Some might suggest, that this is poorly conceived." He said, coming to fly by Astra's side. "Well, it's a good thing that I never listen." You laughed and shook your head, as this whole situation was greatly amusing right from the start. How Hiccup had managed to convince everyone that this was a good plan, was beyond you. Perhaps, being the heir to the village, they had more faith in him, but whatever the reason, you found it ultimately hilarious that the others followed through with this idea. Now that it was too late to change their minds, it was quite an amusing spectacle.
"So," Gobber started, separated momentarily by a wall of ice, "what exactly," he paused again, waiting for the final wall of ice to disappear, "is your plan?" Astra rolled closer to Gobber, to try and stabilise the baby he was on. "Get Toothless back, and kick Drago's a-ss." Astra veered away, jolting Hiccup and dragging out his words. Everyone tried not to hit any more walls as they ascended, leaving the nest.
It was nightfall, and now that everyone was out of the nest, the sporadic flight patterns of these baby dragons were less painful for their riders. They weren't too far from Berk. They'd arrive soon enough, probably by daybreak. You wanted to urge Astra to go on faster, but having baby dragons meant she had to try and match pace. Today wasn't your day.
As the dawn light filled the sky, you approached Berk. A massive flock of dragons swarmed about the Bewilderbeast's head, all under his control. All Vikings on Berk were defenceless and dragonless. "No," Hiccup muttered, not believing the sight before him. "He took all the dragons." Fishlegs gasped, the rest just in as much disbelief as he. "Distract the Alpha. Try to keep his focus off of Toothless." Hiccup ordered, looking back at the others behind him. "Uh, how?" Tuffnut asked, clearly confused. "Have you forgotten who you're riding with?" Eret asked with confidence, now seated on the baby dragon rather than clinging to it for dear life. "There isn't a dragon alive that I can't wrangle." As the words left his mouth, the baby dove down. "Ah! Except for this one!"
As you drew closer, everyone began cheering and calling out blessings, grateful that Hiccup was here. The confused look on Drago's face made you feel proud, to think he thought you'd be stuck at the nest, what a stupid man. While the others ran their course towards the Alpha, Astra brought you towards Toothless. "Tooth?" She crooned, hoping, praying that he could hear her. But he made no response. You ducked low on the saddle, Astra flying so Toothless was to her right, allowing Hiccup to get close to his dragon. He took a deep breath, exhaled, and reached out. "You certainly are hard to get rid of, I'll say that." Drago mused, mildly impressed by Hiccup. "Toothless," Hiccup's voice wavered, and you could hear the strained fear in his voice. His best friend wasn't himself, and he was terrified. However, he wasn't about to give up on him yet. "Hey, it's me, bud. It's me. It's me I'm right here. It's alright." His voice was soft, as to not startle Toothless, but also firm, to not give away his looming fear. "Come back to me." Drago merely laughed, amused by his attempt to bring Toothless out of the Alpha's control.
"He's not yours anymore. He belongs to the Alpha, but, please, O' Great Dragon Master, try to take him. He will not miss a second time." The Alpha drew closer, putting all his focus on Toothless. "It's wasn't your fault, bud." Hiccup soothed, reaching out further. Astra slowly drew in closer, ready to retreat if this proved unsuccessful. "They...made you do it." You caught the slight flickering of Toothless' eyes and found yourself amazed at the clearly strong bond between dragon and rider. This, this was something else. Something precious. He shook his head, trying to push the Alpha out, trying to clear his cloudy thoughts. But his eyes wouldn't stay slits for much longer. The closer Hiccup came, the more Toothless regained control. "You'd never hurt him," he cooed, coming in closer, "you'd never hurt me." He gently placed his hand on Tooth's head, his slits rounding out into his usual, round pupils. The look on his face, the way he slowly realised it was Hiccup in front of him made you incredibly happy. "How are you doing that?" Drago asked, confused and amazed at how Hiccup was getting through to his dragon.
"Please, you are my best friend bud." Toothless crooned softly, eyes slitting for the last time, "My best friend." With one final shake of his head, Toothless had regained control of himself. He looked so overjoyed to see his best friend right there, loving and accepting him, and there was no denying the absolute pure happiness on that dragon's face, knowing Hiccup was right there. "That'a boy! That's it! I'm here!" Astra pulled back slightly, to avoid being hit by Drago's bullhook. "Enough!" He shouted, hitting Toothless on the side of the head. He winced and shook his head, and when Drago swung again, he clasped the weapon between his teeth and used it as a means to throw Drago off his back. He flapped his wings, giving a gummy smile at Hiccup, before slowly falling towards the ground. "Hang on!" He shouted, leaping off Astra's back to get to Toothless. There wasn't much either of you could do, not until they were back in the air.
Hiccup got on his saddle and pulled up just before the pair hit the water, flying back up to meet you in the sky. He snatched a part of a broken flag as he zipped by, coming to your side only for you both to manoeuvre away in time to avoid the Alpha's ice spikes. By the time you got back to him, he had tied the fabric around Toothless' eyes. "Are you crazy?!" You shouted at him. He gave you a shrug and a sly smile, before turning his attention fully towards his dragon. The trust and faith Toothless had in Hiccup was amazing, not even Astra would let you lead her blindly somewhere. You knew there was nothing left to do than stand by and watch, so begrudgingly you landed, staying near the others but on Astra's back, in case you had to help in the nick of time.
As they drew near, Toothless flew over the Bewilderbeast's head, flying upside down to expose his empty saddle. By the time Drago turned back around, Hiccup had glided by the Alpha's head and released Zippleback gas. As soon as he was far enough, he set off a spark, causing the gas to explode which dealt a blow to the Alpha, and knocked Drago off onto the sandy shoreline of Berk. They landed, Hiccup throwing his ignited sword to keep Drago from his bullhook, which singed his hand as it sunk into the ground. "Hold him there Toothless." Toothless obeyed, growling and ready to pounce. "It's all over now." Drago's face twisted into a cruel smile. "Or is it?" By the time everyone realised what he had meant, it was too late. The Alpha let out one icy blast, just as Toothless wrapped himself around his rider. You screamed out, Astra nearly flinging you off as she came down to the ice encasing the dragon and his rider. "No! No, no, no..." You quietly sobbed, falling off Astra and hitting the side of your fist against the cold, hard ice. You slid to the ground, overwhelmed with grief. You hadn't noticed the others, as they came to see the damage, their hopes crushed as they too realised the fate their Cheif had befallen.
However, the ominous, screeching whistle, the all too familiar sound of a Night Fury, ready to fire grew from within the ice. A blue light grew as well, and it wasn't long before you scrambled back to avoid the debris that flew away as the chunk of ice exploded. It was then that you came to see a glorious sight, one you hadn't seen in many years. Blue, glowing scales, head and throat. Toothless was challenging the Alpha. Hiccup was crouched beneath Toothless, unscathed and shielded by his dragon. He leapt up one of the remaining ice spikes, growling and hissing words of endearment that one should not repeat, as a challenge to the Alpha. He responded, accepting Toothless' challenge. Hiccup looked just as amazed as you are. Both you and Valka made your way to his side, all watching in awe at this rare display. "He's challenging the Alpha!" Hiccup exclaimed, completely awestruck. "To protect you," Valka added.
You looked onwards at Toothless, moved by his love for Hiccup. If he could move mountains and level seas, all for his rider, then you could do that same for Astra. You could do the same for Hiccup. It was at this moment, you knew that you had fallen in love with the right man.
