When Ollie woke up, she was in a cage, alone. She felt weak, and tired, and she had a needle in her leg. She was at the vet, but it didn’t seem like they were going to Euthanize her, it seemed like they were helping her. It seemed as though they didn’t know it was her, the dog they all feared. She stood up and sat near the door, wanting to get out. The vet came and let her out. He put her on an exam table, and checked to make sure she was healthy other than her weight loss and injuries. She wasn’t well enough for a blood test, so they didn’t do it. They kept her there for a couple days, until she gained enough weight to be considered stable. Ollie was sent to a foster home, where she would be cared for until she was healthy. Ollie was alone, or so she thought. Ollie was not the only dog there, a labrador poodle mix, labrador pitbull mix, and a labrador husky mix. The labradoodle was a male, the others were female. Ollie was the only purebred labrador, she prefered to stay away from the other dogs. She wanted to be alone, she wanted Sol back. She sat in the corner of the room, she faced the wall, not wanting to make eye contact with the others. She didn’t even realize they were there, two of them just came back in from the backyard. They saw her in the corner, and were quiet. One dog spoke up.
“Oh, look I’m going to hide in the corner.” He said.
The other dog laughed, and they continued to make fun of her.
“If I can’t see them, they can’t see me.” The dog said.
“If I ignore them, they will go away.” He said, laughing.
Ollie growled, letting them know she wouldn’t hesitate to attack, but they kept making fun of her.
She turned to face them, and they stopped.
“You’re a female?” He asked. “My name is Ducky, this is Glory.”
“Leave me alone.” Ollie said. “I won’t hesitate to attack.”
“Oh course you won’t.” Ducky sarcastically said.
“I guess you won’t hesitate to go cry to your mom either.” Glory laughed.
“My parents are dead.” Ollie said.
“Oh, my parents are dead.” Ducky said, mockingly. “I’ll just assume they’re dead because I’ve never seen them.”
They continued mocking her, when the other dog came in.
“Stop.” The dog said. “Please, I can’t stand it anymore. What are you making fun of this time? The wall?”
“No, we are making fun of that dog.” Glory said.
She saw the dog sitting in the corner, it was clear she was ready to attack.
“Ollie.” She whispered.
Ollie was scared, and when she was scared she usually attacked. The dog ran over to Ollie, and told her to calm down.
“Ollie, it’s okay, just calm down.” She said. “It’s me, Sol. Calm down and no one gets hurt.”
Ollie looked at Sol with disbelief, but then she pulled Sol closer and licked her, but the fire never left her eyes.
“You know this dog?” Ducky asked.
“Yes, she is my best friend.” Sol replied. “She saved me when I was a few weeks old.”
“She’s weird.” Glory said. “How could anyone love her?”
“No one does.” Sol said. “Other than me.”
“Oh.” Ducky said. “So it is okay if we make fun of her, since she must be used to it.”
“The last one who made fun of me was never seen again.” Ollie said. “I’d suggest that if you want to live, you will stop.”
