About six months into her job Mrs. Santiago, Gabriel’s mother came to visit. Julia sat behind her desk and looked on as the woman congratulated her. She felt sick but bore through it. Mrs. Santiago looked downcast but brightened up a bit when she spoke to her. When she was gone, Julia sighed and sat back. Her mind ran on the past few days. Gabriel did not bother her in fact he hardly seemed to be around. She felt crazy but she actually missed him. She was thinking about the tacos she had given him when he stepped in the office with a woman. Julia stiffened and looked at her. She was petite and had shoulder length blonde hair. Her black business suit fell to her thighs and she was wearing a pair of black five inch stilettos.
Gabriel looked at her and then smiled. “Julia I would like you to meet Erica,” he said. The woman looked at her and then turned to him. “Come on baby,” she said and laced her arms around his neck. Julia looked away and began typing on her computer. They must have stayed like that for a while because when Julia got up to use the bathroom the woman stepped out of the way. She cast down her head and walked past them. She made her way to one of the stalls of the bathroom before locking it. “Why was she feeling like this?” she thought. She took a deep breath. “Pull yourself together Julia,” she said.
After using the bathroom she returned to find that they had gone. She sighed and finished her work. On her way down to the elevator Devin stepped on. “Hey I haven’t seen Gabe?” he said. “Yes I’m sorry I guess he left,” she said and looked away. “In that case I’ll ride down with you,” he said. He stepped in and he smiled at her. “I heard that you’re pregnant,” he said. She groaned inwardly, news sure travelled fast around here. “How far along are you?” he asked. Before she could even reply his hands were on her stomach. “What are you doing?” she cried. He smiled. “Relax, I’ll tell you,” he said. He was feeling her stomach when the elevator stopped and the doors slid open.
Someone cleared their throat and she looked up to see Gabriel standing there. Devin pulled away his hands and stepped out. “I was just looking for you,” he said. Gabriel nodded and then stepped in. Julia stepped out and Devin stared as Gabriel went up. When the elevator had closed he turned to a red faced Julia and shook his head. “You’re not pregnant,” he said. She sighed and leaned against the wall of the car park. “I’m not,’ she said. “Then why did you tell him that,” Devin asked. She shook her head and a tear slid down. “I was so stupid,” she said. “What happened?” he asked. She took a deep breath and told him everything. “He was a player but he changed I made him make a promise,” he said. “But he brought a girl today,” Julia said. Devin sighed and looked at her. “You know you did something to him right,” he said. She looked away.
“Do you know why he was a player?” he asked. She shook her head. He took her hand and pulled her to one of the benches that lined the building outside. “He wasn’t always like that, he had a fiancé who he really liked, they were engaged until he caught her,” he said. “She cheated?” she asked. He nodded. “Some people got hooked on alcohol to keep away stress but he could not deal with the fact that she cheated so he went and cheated on her,” he said. Julia shook her head. “But you said he stopped.” Devin nodded. “But what about the girl?” she asked. “The one today, I saw her too, that’s why I came he broke his promise, “he said.
Julia looked away and sighed. “I know you have feelings for him,” he said. “Why because you’re a doctor?” she asked. He laughed. “How did he know you were pregnant?” Devin asked. “I had a UTI and some weird food he ordered so I vomited and well you know I went like a million times a day in the bathroom and he said that I was pregnant.” Devin burst out laughing. “Seriously,” he said. She nodded and smiled. “Don’t worry I’ll tell him,” he said. “But I think I should,” she said, “When the time is right don’t worry.”She smiled and then he pulled her into a hug. “Thanks,” she said.
