Wednesday, Thursday and Friday consisted of me studying, practicing footie and staying up at night to listen to Niall talk about how gorgeous Elise looked in a ponytail and how he wanted to start working out in order to impress her. During those days I also walked past Harry four times, but he never really approached me. If he actually saw me, he just stared intensely and proceeded walking. I never really gave him any reaction in return.

Monday, during lunch, me and friend-group were hanging out on the field. Niall was strumming on a guitar and Caleb was jokingly singing along to Fireflies by Owl City. Elise was tapping her yellow painted nails against the hard textbook in the grass while writing something down in her notes. Adeline, on the other hand, was making out with her boyfriend.

I should probably say, she wasn't with that guy Lucas anymore. No, this guy was a lot broader and a lot more...my type. Therefore, I could not help but gawk at the couple where the sat, sucking off each other's tongues as if they were food. I am not gonna lie, that turned me on—and when I realised that, I allowed myself to focus on my other friends instead.

"...'Cause everything is never as it seems," Caleb sing-songed blissfully while pretending to play the drums on his jean-covered thighs. When I smiled at the two singing boys and took a bite out of the sandwich that I had bought from the cafeteria after skipping lunch, Elise spoke, making her the first person to converse within the last five minutes.

"Mr. Allen told me to write down goals for my future, but I can't think of anything that isn't marrying Ryan Reynolds."

Niall stopped strumming.

She continued, "Do you guys have any goals?"

Other than making you marry my best friend, no.

"I wanna be a basketball player," Caleb said before sipping on the straw to his soda. I'm reasonably certain that all of us frowned, as basketball was something none of us had ever heard him talk about before. He observed our reactions and chortled before explaining himself, "Just because it's a goal doesn't mean I'm ever gonna get there."

"That's what I mean!" Elise literally stabbed her pencil into her notebook in frustration. "I want to come up with something deliberate, that is actually achievable. But I can't," she muttered. I felt Niall's emotions spring upon me once again. Elise continued, "Mr. Allen told me that without setting targets, you won't ever get anywhere in life. Apparently it's the key to success, or something like that."

"But you like socialisation, yeah? Maybe you could be a teacher?" I suggested only to then gain a frown from her. I snorted, "Alright. Terrible idea. A therapist, maybe?"

She sighed, "What's fun about carrying around people's problems all day?"

None of us answered. Instead we all seemed to sink into our own trances as we proceeded thinking about the goal-theory. I was sceptical. Did I already have to plan out my life in order to reach the success I wanted? Or could I think deterministically and lazily expect for my destiny to already have my future sorted out for me? The thought of not succeeding frightened me, so I asked for Elise to hand me pen paper so I could compose a list of milestones that I aspired to reach in the upcoming year.
