"How long have you had him?" Dr. Frederick asked me as he quickly flipped through the pictures I gave him.

"About a week." I answered, keeping my eyes on Niall as he sat on the examination table. He trailed his eyes all around the room, pausing occasionally to meow and look back at me. He was confused, he didn't know where he was.

"Do you have any idea how long he's been like this?" Dr. Frederick glanced at me.

"No." I shook my head. "I'm afraid not. Less than two months is all I know for sure."

"Mm-hmm." He hummed as he turned his attention back to flipping through the pictures. "Ooh!" He paused and narrowed his eyes. "What's this one?" he asked, pointing at the one he paused at.

I looked at the picture. It was the branded number Niall had on his arm. I cringed at the sight of it. I hated being reminded of him having that.

"That was a burn Niall had when I found him. I'm pretty sure it was a brand." I huffed. "He had it on his arm. His... left forearm." I continued to explain.

"Ouch." He flinched. He looked at Niall with concern. "Does he still have it?"

"No." I answered immediately. "I healed it already. I couldn't stand even the thought of him having it anymore."

"Good." He nodded. He gathered the pictures back into a neat pile and put them back into the file folder. He set them on the desk and clapped his hands together, looking at me.

"Speaking of healing him." He started. "Just so I'm clear, have you tried healing him?"

I turned my whole attention toward him. "Yes, I have." I nodded.

"Okay." He confirmed. "Because your mother explained to me when she called me that you have tried to heal him, but, in a nutshell, nothing was happening. Is that correct?"

I trailed my eyes off to the side as I inhaled deeply. "Yeah." I exhaled devastatingly.

He chuckled. "I wouldn't get too upset about that, Angel. This is your first big shot." He reassured.

He sat down in the spinning chair in front of the desk, leaning his elbow on the tabletop behind him, and clasping his fingers together. "Anyway, would you mind explaining to me what it was you felt when you were healing him? Or what you felt that wasn't happening? Or anything you sensed and didn't sense? Things like that?"

Dr. Frederick already knew the rundown of my powers. He was the one who helped me discover them and learn to control them. He knew how they worked, what they did and didn't do, and how long I had them. The only thing he didn't know was the origin, but he hasn't given up on trying to figure that out yet.

I sat down in the guest chair across from him and thought for a moment. It was still kind of hard to explain things like this, but I tried to think of a good way to put it.

"Well," I explained, "basically, it felt like there's nothing wrong with him." I explained.

He raised an eyebrow and his chin in confusion as he looked at me.

I continued. "When I healed that branded number, for instance, I could sense the injury. I could sense where it was, how bad it was, how much it hurt, and so on. I could take care of it because I sensed it. However, when I tried to heal his...umm..." I gestured my hands toward Niall as I spoke, looking for the right words, "general... condition? If you will? I couldn't sense that. I used a lot of my power trying to generally heal him, but, overall, I sensed there was nothing to heal. It felt like nothing was wrong."
